Hi, I had my TAR 5 weeks ago, and been in my snazzy boot for 3 weeks. It all went according to plan, the staff have been great, but it's the small things that you worry about. Like how much is too much? What pain should you be feeling etc etc I'm no stranger to operations, I'm more metal than I am women at this point, but I still worry a bit. I've recently been getting shooting pains on the outside of my ankle, like electric shocks, they come and go, and are not pleasant. Anyone had this before? Hope everyone is well on the road to recovery!

Hi Carrie,
On Wednesday, I will be 13 weeks post op. I had the TAR, calcaneal osteotomy, and soft tissue (tendons etc) repair. I had lots of electric shocks. Probably need some on my brain too. But, I was assured it was normal and most likely nerve type pain. I am still experiencing many unpleasant feelings on my skin. I have 4 different incisions as well as tons of scar tissue from previous surgeries related to the ankle.
Hang in there, it might take a long time to heal up. I still feel a lot of very uncomfortable sensations in my foot and ankle; from skin, to nerves and soft tissue. One thing that doesn't hurt and that is no arthritic pain!! Yay!
I have not heard much from anyone lately and wish the same as you. Recovery.

Hi Carrie,
I just received a total ankle replacement on 11/22/17. It is now nine weeks later and my toes are still numb and I get those fierce electrical pains in my toes as well. I can't put my foot down without swelling and extreme discomfort. Another thing that is driving me crazy, is that I feel the implant in the ankle part. I'm still not walking and am scared. Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Hi Tim,
My doctor told me nothing about the swelling or the tingling in my toes either.
My stitches were removed on week eight, and he said no pt until he's positive the incision will not break open.
I'm assuming that they don't tell you the full scope of post op, because too many people would opt out. I know I would have if he told me the whole truth.

Hi Enewt2!
My not walking was an incesion healing issue. I started PT yesterday and it was nothing short of brutal. The PT said I will be walking in my boot in two weeks with one crutch, and then in a shoe with a cane in one month. I go back to PT on Wednesday and Friday. Three times a week for six weeks, and I'm positive it will be extended.

H I’m 12 days post tar. I’m found this board because I was researching if the late night pain and sensations I’m having are normal. I’m not taking any pain meds throughout the day but can’t sleep or get it comfortable at night. so I’ve been taking pain meds at night just to get to sleep.
Otherwise no real issues. I go back for follow-up on 2/22 (hope that’s good luck) and hope to get the go ahead on boot.
Health & Healing to you all
