Total ankle replacement

Posted , 2 users are following.

I had a TAR 17 days ago. The dr. also did surgery on ligaments and tendons. I am nonweightbearing and in a cast. Keeping my foot elevated and pretty much couch and bed ridden. I am still having a lot of pain. The last two days I have significant pain in my heel. Feeling frustrated. Looking for advice from other TAR patients and how the recovery process and outcome gas been.

TAR recovery can be pretty tough especially dealing with everyday tasks such as simply preparing meals and carrying drinks around the place as you already know.

I had my first TAR in 2012 and it was a very much more difficult and painful recovery to the revision six years later due to poor original surgery. elevation and iced ace bandages were a great help but of course the iced bandages are only possible when the cast has been removed.

The level of pain was insignificant after the total revision which is amazing considering my surgeon had to remove the original prosthesis repair all the damage and put in a larger replacement. the surgery took five hours rather than two that the original surgery took.

It is two years on now and for eighteen months I have lived life with hardly a thought of my surgery. I do not run but that is all. I swim most days, go brisk walks of six or more miles up and down hill and spend a couple of hours most days doing archery.

How does this help you. Well hopefully it will give you some encouragement. You should not be in much pain at your stage so I suggest that you get back to your surgical team and quote my experience. Where did you have your surgery carried out and who was your surgeon and how experienced was he/her with doing TARs?

    Good luck, Richard
