Total Elbow Replacement - I have had this done. Anyone else?

Posted , 57 users are following.

In June 2014 I had my left elbow replaced.  At the present time this is 9 weeks ago. I have had good progress but concerned about doing anything that will make it come loose.

Has anyone else had the same operation and how has it been and has there been any problem with the joint coming loose?

    Hi Jaw, Maureen

In the USA approximately 2000 elbow replacements are performed yearly compared to a million hips and a million knees.

Even rarer here is the DRUJ replacement which I am having in January. I will be so relieved to pronate again.

Great recoveries to everyone...I would love to learn from your exoerience.

    kind regards

My right arm doesnt straighten all the way. Been like this since 3 years old. It stops at about 90 degrees.   I've had pain in it for about 4 yearsThey say I have bone on bone arthritis now and I am 19 years old. I already had a 6 hour surgery on the site with an external fixator and the whole deal. Had a very unique surgery performed at HSS in NY. It did not give my arm any more motion but took the pain away after a 2 month recovery with a week in the hospital. Now two years after that surgery I am having pain once again. They say now in California at Stanford, my only option is a total elbow replacement or elbow fusion or to just wait a couple years and see how technology changes. Just hard to wait when you are in so much pain. What would you all reccomend? Thanks for any advice!

I had the same options you have plus just using braces and being one-armed. I finally opted for the elbow replacement and had it 4 weeks ago. Virtually no pain, and  have a good range of motion already. It feels like a good working arm again. Yeah! I wish I had done it sooner! I think fear was holding me back...

Wow! That is amazing. Can you do everything you used to do ? May I ask how old you are? I just do not know if I should make this choice now or wait a few more years. I am scared too.

I'm happy to hear your surgery was successful. I fell over my dog and crushed my elbow Surgery hadn't helped so I have to see a surgeon next week about an elbow replacement. Can't play golf with the pain so I have to overcome my fear and have surgery.

      Blessing,

It is worth it if you are in extreme pain. I got rid of most of the pain and my mobility is quite a bit better than it was too! The limited weight lifting is a concern though, so this is a "last resort surgery" for when there are few or no other optionw for a normal life. Good luuck with making your decision!

I only have mild pain occasionally and I have full range of motion. My elbow was crushed so I don't have a complete elbow. Not enough strength to play golf. I can't seem to find someone who is able to play gold with an elbow replacement.

      Blessings!

Happy to hear your elbow replacement was successful and you pain has gone. Do you play any sports? I'm an avid golfer and my left arm was injured when I fell over my dog. I'm hoping to hear from someone who can still play sports after a replacement.

      Blessing!

      Hi Irene,

I am only 8 weeks into my recovery and have not been given the go ahead for strengthening activities yet. I am a athlete though, so I will figure someway to do what I love: swimming, boating/sailing, camping, bicycling, etc. I would think you could do this gold once you are past the strengthening stage and have some stability in the joint. Maybe with a brace, but who cares? The main limit is lifting, not being able to lift more than 2-5 pounds ever. I use my other arm to do most things right now, but I am also learning to take lighter loads, make more trips, ask for help etc., so as not to overstress the joint! A friend of mine had shoulder replacement surgery and she still rides horses and carries 50 lbg bales of hay (with a 5 lb weight lift limit) I asked her how, and she said she uses tools to slide the bales and her good arm to do most of the work, and assists with her repaired arm up to 5 lbs. I liked hearing that!

Wow! I have not heard anyone say 30 pounds before. I have only heard 2 or 5 pounds from all the different doctors and patients I have talked to about this. ARe you sure about this?
