Total hip replacement , 33 years old, hip dysplasia

Hello, I thought it would be helpful to talk to others who are going through a hip replacement recovery at the moment. Feeling very down. Its seems alot of people feel this way after hip replacement.

I was born with hysplasia, discovered when i was ten. Have surgrey but it was unsucessful.I have spend the last 23 years with pain and a limp. I didnt have any more surgrey because I was so young and advised by docotor. Have any of you had hip dysplasia? the wear and tear of living with an unsuccessful treatment of this required me to get very early replacement. The hip was so bad. I notice that pain is gone now.

I am very anxious about getting back to walking, hopefully without a limp. 6 weeks with touch bearing weight is tough. I am going back to work ( sit down job) on monday but its all very scary. what is your experience with physio? any one else gone through this?

I trust that your chair at work is suitable for you to return to work this early on.

It is normal to feel down, like me today I got up planned to have a nice day and go out laid down on my bed and slept... just did not want to be bothered doing anything once I got on the bed.

Physio or lack of... I have had two sessions so far and I am not impressed I am going to look for a private physio who may actually care about getting me stronger.

I am 7 weeks post and had both hips replaced but would not consider thinking about work as yet.

Good luck for Monday but remember only you will know if you are doing the right thing. xx smile

I know exactly how you feel. I told my boss i would send some emails during time off but I couldnt even bring myself to do that. Thanks for the tip about physio. I will be looking for a private one too if I dont think they are helping or not able to have appointments soon.

Both hips replaced! Good on you. Sleeping at night must be tough. hopefully we will be somewhat back to normal by christmas.

Hi, im 20 years old and was diognosed with congenital hip dysplasia when i was 6 weeks old. Had my first surgery when i wad 1 year. My hip joint ended up fused to the outside of the socket and grew into a huge mass of bone so in theory I had no hip. When I was 7 year old I was diognosed with avascula necrosis (my hip joint died) my pelvis was tilted at 6cm leaving me with a huge 6cm LLD, a limp, curved spine and has ruined my knees. I had no internal rotation at all. I still do not. I had about 12 surgeries in 12 years. This year I had my hip replacement. And a collarbone surgery. Up to 14 surgeries now 😂

I think many people can weight bare after surgery, I wasnt allowed and even if i Wanted to my body couldnt hold me up.

Have you had your op? If so how long pre op are you? Its not the easiest of recoveries, we have to be patient and listen to our bodies. That is the most important bit x

      Hi Sarah,

I have not spoke to many people with hip dysplasia who knows what its like to live with it. you are only 20 with a hip replacement. i hated living with a limp especially in school. but most people are cool about it. its the pain that gets you down. do you find that? 14 surgeries, that is really tough. how do you find going out with friends? I was really shy at your age, but Im alot more confident now.

My op was 6 weeks ago.my check up is on tuesday in oxford. How are you finding walking now? is it painful? is it better?

I was bullied all the way through school for it. Especially my limp. And these days I dont have any friends at all to go out with. Just my fiance but we dont go out often because my pain in other areas of my body is worse now than before the surgery and even though im 6 months post op I have a long way to go. My surgery was anything but normal so neither is my recovery haha. Walking is still very painful and im still having to use a crutch to walk.

What about you. How are you finding the recovery?

Haha no, I know what you mean, hip dysplasia is more common in dogs than it is in humans, even googling it more pages come up for it in dogs than people haha x

Good morning Beatrice. I too was born with hip dysplasia. I was in a full body cast my first 6 months of life with a rod that kept my legs apart. The next 6 months body cast from waist down. At the age of 12 I had surgery on left knee to stop growth so my right leg could catch up. Which it didn't but I have been told that if they didn't do that I would of been even shorter that what I was. For most part life was good. I did limp and my body compensated by leaning some. Started having problems in my later 20s early 30s. Seeing orthopedic Drs on & off. Tried shoe lifts, and kept away from hip replacement surgery as Drs said I was still too young. I'm now almost 54. And the last 2/3 years started having lots of pain & difficulty getting around. The last year was using cane and shoe lift. Decided to have hip replacement surgery. Unfortunately for me 3 weeks into my first right hip replacement I dislocated it. 2 days later had to have a revision. Was non weight bearing for 6 weeks. Was pretty hard. Just been weight bearing a lil over 2 weeks now. Depression has really set in. Crying every day. Scared to put full weight. Worried about walking normal again. It's been a tough time but I've seen a lot of improvement but the depression keeps me down. I hope that all works out for you. I know my hip was really bad prior to surgery. I was 1 & 1/2 inch short. I'm almost the same length now. But the muscles are now so tight so having to work that out. Knee is not bending to its full potential because of the tightness. Take care and let us know how you are doing and know everyone on this forum is here to listen & offer advice & encouragement. Hugs, LD

      Hi Linda,

I understand completely , the depression hit me not long after surgrey. mind you, I have had probelms with depression anyway because of living with pain. Im woried about walking normal again too but we both know deep down that we will. it will just take time. I think the scary thing is not knowing when. How are you finding physio? are you back to work yet? Im going back on monday, but partner will have to drive me. how was your 6 weeks post op check up?

Thanks for messaging me . you will be ok too. sometimes crying helps. there is no shame in it.

Morning Beatrice. Sorry I didn't ans your questions. Physical therapy is good. Especially now that I'm able to do more than when I was non weight bearing. As for work, I don't work outside of the home. I took care of my grandkids, the house and all the errands & grocery shopping. Unfortunately I'm not able to do those things yet. My 6 weeks oat op check up went well. Dr was pleased with X-rays and had me weight bearing (as tolerated) again. I'm assuming today you go back to work? Best of luck and prayers for continued healing. Hugs, LD

hi beatrice,  warm welcome to this wonderful forum where we share our personal stories and experiences - you will find that you are not alone anymore - How great is it to have that awful pain gone, right???  Do you have PT right now? How far post-op are you ? Please remember that you just had major surgery where muscles and tendons were cut; hip joint forcefully dislocated; heavy remodelling was needed in order to bang in the protheses ...be very gentle with your self and come back here any time okay? big warm hugrenee I
