hi im carl male 35. its been a week now since i had my right hip done. recovery is going well i can feel the muscles getting stronger day by day.

sleeping is a mad one i dont sleep on my back usually as im 6ft3 and have lower back problems (sciatica). so some nights ill be lucky if i get a good 5hours in.

i hate the fact i have to really on my gf to assist me in the simplest of tasks it makes me feel like a little boy but i have to keep telling myself its all for a good cause. i also suffer with mental health problems so being bed bound most of the time is really annoying and stressfull . but onwards and upwards as they say ill get is ther eventually just hope it goes fast 🤪

    Hi Carl,

Congratulations to you on your recovery.

    Trust me, it gets easier.

I had TLHR on 05, March and was just in this morning with the Consultant, just over 5 weeks since the operation.

I got the all clear to drive my automatic again and go back to work.

I did get a bit of a telling off because I have been walking, albeit short distances, around the house and locally without crutches or sticks.

six weeks with both sticks no matter what!

When he had gone, his junior doctor said " If you're comfortable then that's fine".

So I have a two month respite before I go for TRHR.

    Onwards and upwards,

The hard part is daytime tv, but I've discovered a Jazz radio channel and life is good.

You won't notice the time flying by, and the pampering can be nice.

One day you might have to return the kindness,

    Good luck from Ireland,

    Regards,

    Brian Meleady.

cheers bud.wow 6 weeks back to work thats not bad then, ive been told 3 months.jesus you have to have both hips done.have you been in an accident if you dont mind me asking .

i usually watch youtube or films or listen to music, but ive never been that good at sitting still for ages.

No accident, just wear and tear. By back to work I mean bit by bit. I drive a a taxi and am self employed.

I drove privately yesterday and found it a wee bit uncomfortable.

Monday night I might venture out for an hour or two working.

Now that I'm off all meds, my body seems to miss the Tramadol. It has me with flu like symptoms, but I'll give it a few days to see if symptoms abate.

    Hi Carl,

You said you do not like being bed bound most of the time, why are you in bed? You do need to walk around the house and garden several times a day, even up and down the road. I know you will be on blood thinners but blood clots are real, yes rest, you need to if your leg swells but please be careful how long you are immobile as that does not aid recovery. Good luck with your recovery, the twelve weeks actually do pass quickly.

yes of course im up and about when i can.also doing my stretches several times a day.ive only been out of hospital a week so everything is stil really painfull and tender and its putting alot of strain on my back aswel. so i have to rest as much as i can also.

5 hours ... wow, you are lucky ... I thought I was doing well with a couple of hours sleep per night after each of my three hip operations (had 2 revisions).

I found I had to cat-nap in the day, but an iPod with soothing music helped somewhat.

We all know exactly what you mean about being helpless ... it soon passes, but seems like an age when you start. Everything gets so much easier at 6 weeks. No-one tells you it can also be an emotional roller coaster journey either, I had never suffered depression before my recoveries.

Hiya Carl 😁 good luck with your recovery and hope time goes swiftly for ya, we all have the sleeping on back problems, but with ya lower back issues it must be tough for ya. Being stuck in the house can be a real pain, especially if you've been working and enjoying being out of the house, I was a little lucky on that as I was working from home and this gave me something to get back too quickly, sounds like ya have had a crap few years and having the THR can set you back a lot, it's taken me a lot longer than I would of wished for to get back up to being OK, now I'm on the waiting list for my LTHR fingers crossed this summer...

All the best bud and every day every week things will move on and you'll be amazed where you are in a couple on months......

      Stay Safe & Stay Happy...😁

      Pete....

Hey Carl, The 1st week is the hardest physically and mentally, the speed of recovery can be surprising if you follow the exercises religiously without over doing it and getting plenty of rest also, by the end of week 2 it will feel 100% different, I managed to get back into the gym for light rehab from week 3 and built steady, i was 10 weeks post op yesterday and completed a 5k parkrun on the flat with a personal best time, you are young enough to recover quicker, good luck and keep pushing. Sean, what type of hip replacement did you have as that is an unbelievable recovery, I had three months precautions, no bending, twisting etc.,

    • Posted

wow 3 weeks in and hitting the gym.i thought 6 weeks was the minimum before any bending etc

    • Posted

Carl, I had twelve weeks precautions with posterior THR.

    • Posted

yeh i suppose its all down to your body age health etc and generally how quick you do recover.

We all heal at different rates. While I'm just six weeks post Op and moving mostly without aids, my Hip tells me to take it easy when I over exert myself.

Jen, I had posterior THR and have been very lucky with recovery, the surgeon dropped me to one stick for outdoors on 12 days (staples out day) and no sticks within the home, pretty much removed the precautions on week 6, i count myself very lucky.

      Good luck with recovery... Sean

Carl, all i did was add to the exercises the surgeon gave me but added resistance bands with some minimal bending stuff with light kettle bells and built it from there, stability and mobility 1st and the strength grew fairly quickly, i did some upper body circuits to try and keep some fitness up, all you can do in week 1 is the exercises 4/5 times a day and plenty of rest/sleep, stay positive and the gains will come quickly.
