Total hip replacement

Hi. I had THR (right hip )2.5 years ago due to arthritis and depleted cartilage and I've regretted my decision every day since!. I am in a lot of pain and discomfort and still cannot comfortably lie on that side. I have had a steroid injection on two occasions since, one by guided ultrasound..to no avail. No improvement whatsoever! X-rays taken indicated all was fine but MRI showed inflammation at site of surgery. Am experiencing a lot of lower back pain past few months, in addition to hip pain/soreness aggravated by standing or weight-bearing eg a 3L carton of milk is too much and am awaiting appt for MRI on my spine. So as you can imagine, I personally would not recommend you have surgery unless absolutely necessary..and I would suggest to delay it for as long as possible, within reason, esp since you would most likely need it again, depending on life span of prosthesis. Thats my novel! Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

sorry to hear about your experience. that is exactly why i don't go forward with the surgery, i have heard too many issues from the surgery. so i made a personal decision to not do the surgery until the pain outweighs the risk. that way if i do have to do it and something goes wrong, i had not choice and will have no regret. but for now, it is anti inflamatories, cbd, and low impact exercise. and so far so good.

what approach of for the surgery did you have?

i do understand i also sometimes regret having operations ...but when the pain becomes unbearable there really is not any choice . I also still am struggling with pains in hip and back and down my leg , and to top it off my foot is full of arthritis which does not help when trying to keep my walking up grrr . i do hear most people have no trouble and are better off after , so i guess it helps some .

I am sorry to hear about the problems you are having but I do not agree with you on waiting . All too often on this site we hear about all the problems and not about the vast majority of people who have it done and it has been an absolute godsend , I personally didn't hesitate and I am 52 and all has gone very well so far .

My weird physio in Antigua held me back for 6 months. He would have sent me to Trinidad and they don't publish their results, so maybe he's seen too many bad recoveries. In fact I now wish I had done it at least 2 years ago.

I am very sorry to hear about your plight. What a disappointment. I often wonder in case like that, if anything is known about the track record of the surgeon, for example what percentage of his procedures end in complications. In my case I found that information beforehand and his score was around 1 % . In the preceding 9 months he had zero.

My hip is doing OK after 3 months although I have some limitations. But I notice now I can walk further, it stresses up other stuff such as as back and knees which had had an easily life for the previous year when I could only walk 10 minutes on level ground. I think I have to expect that as an ancient.

      John,

If you can check out your surgeon great but, here in Wales unlike England surgeons are not required to put their results on line. I tried hard to find my surgeons success rates. Luckily, I have had no problems, with my hip to date in the seventeen months since hip op.

I guessed that was the case. It does say in the permanent notes on this site you are entitled to ask how many procedures your guy does per year and what his record is , but it may not be that easy in practice. At least in UK, the price is right! Glad to here you are doing well.

I agree,, I had the surgery do to bone to bone on my hip, it has just been over a year and I'm in more pain now then when I just was suffering from arthritis. Is there a solution for all the pain? I would like to exercise but every day I'm suffering from pain. I do work on my feet but I explained that to my doctor before I had the surgery and he said all would be well. I truly have times when I feel I can not walk. Help if anyone has a answer. PLEASE.

my case is similar to yours. MY new surgeon feels I MAY BE REACTING TO THE STAINLESS PINS USED IN MY SURGERY? He is taking them out in November. I have had pain since my first day post op to date. I did not have a THR, but instead a femoral neck pinning. i have been to several surgeons, until I happened upon the one I am working with now who is able to think out of the box to find solutions. Have you investigated reactions to the implant?
