Total Hip replacement

I have just come out of hospital after having a THR.

On the day of my admission to hospital last week (Thursday 21st Jan), I weighed 68 kgs. The following morning after my discharge (Tuesday 26th Jan) I weighed 73 kgs. In five days that is almost impossible to go up 5kgs.

Of the days I was in hospital I fasted just short of 24 hours, then the next day ate very lightly. The meals were delicious but small. I felt they were the correct size for a female in the days following surgery. Mains were in/on a small oval plate or dish. Could order snacks whenever but I didn't because I felt nauseous some of the time. Husband sometimes finished my food.

OK I had IV fluids for two days. I was more confined to bed but did get up to shower the following day, do my exercises, walk the corridor. I did not see anyone else walking the corridors at all, leave alone as much as me.

I don't know how much the prosthesis weighs compared to my discarded bone but I'm sure it is not 5 kgs. I also do not know whether I have some oedema still in my leg or retained fluids from the bags of IV fluid.

What's going on? I am genuinely nonplussed. Any thoughts?

Megan

I meant to say that the same scales were used both times.......at home before surgery and day after discharge.

There was got to be an error on the scales somehow. It would be very difficult to put on that much weight so quickly. The prosthesis is slightly heavier, but not that much heavier!

How is your recovery going ptolemy. After having such an awful series of problems during your last op, I hope your recovery is a lot smoother.

Thanks for asking. Due to the fainting I have now got several appointments to get my heart checked and the blister caused by the clamp on my leg during the op burst and I have had to have the district nurse in three times a week, I am now just going to the surgery once a week. It is slowly healing. I could not believe how deep it was. On the other hand my hip was fine!

It would be nice. I managed to have fall a couple of days ago so have some nasty bruises, I seem to be determined to slow my recovery down!

    I had the same.

Some say the new hip can add 2 or 3 pounds on net. But main weight gain is from swelling from my research if all other things are equal, ie no change in diet etc.

The swelling can go on for a year plus, I am 6 months now from my op, and it still flares up. Its the body healing itself, its quite an interesting subject if you google it.
