Total hip replacement on 12/26 - coming home after surgery

Hi folks- after 1 year of pain, I've finally scheduled anterior total hip replacement. I also developed AVN. I am otherwise a healthy, once active 66 yr old woman. I live alone with my 2 Portuguese Water Dogs, Stella and Randall. I live in New Jersey and have 2 adult sons who live in Brooklyn, NY and Philadelphia. My son in Philly is going to take my dogs for a bit and I also have a great petsitter. Being that I live alone my surgeon is keeping me in the hospital for 2 nights. A few folks have strongly suggested that I should be going to rehab. My bedroom is on the second floor but I can sleep on the main floor in my reclining chair and a half. Anyone out there live alone and come home or have you gone to rehab? My pre-op is this Wednesday at Hospital for Special Surgery. I can do all my pre-op clearance in one day. I'll see their internist, get a chest x-ray, education class and meet with whomever to tell me what else I may need aside from a raised toilet seat. Any advice is appreciated! I used to hike and walk miles and I can maybe walk a few blocks at a time.

Many thanks!

Georgette

I live alone and had a right hip replacement. My sister came to stay for a week and a half which really did help. I was surprised how mobile I actually was in leaving hospital though, I did feel quite tired on the other hand. I had to be able to walk up and down stairs before leaving hospital.

I suggest you take advantage of rehab and any other help offered. This is a painful and restricting operation, you will need to rest as much as possible, keep it elevated etc. If you try this on your own you will be exhausted, every move you make will tax you. get the help!
