Yeah...in my dreams!!! Not even close. Started out on the streets of Brooklyn with metal wheels. There was no such thing as "ice time". Instead, we soaked rolls of black friction tape in water for three days and then froze them for another three so we had the iced pucks sliding on asphalt... Like stopping a rock in goal.

Learned how to ice skate and played goal for Fordham University in the Bronx for three years in the late 60's. The school was not NCAA level like those in the frozen north and New England so we played a "club" circuit of all the NYC schools at Riverdale Arena where the Rangers practiced. However, our "ice time" was like midnight to 3 AM!!! Still, it was great. Made my own mask out of coat hangers, aluminum and white adhesive tape. You couldn't "buy" a goalie mask as they had just been invented by Plante and were all custom made for NHL goalies. Never wore one on the street and never took one to the face.

After that, it was marriage, jobs, etc. so I got together with 30 local guys in Jersey and we formed a hockey club that chose sides and played early morning games for years and years. When rollerblades were invented, that was another way to play. By then, I could get a real goalie mask...only took one to the face in all that time and it did NOT go in!

I ripped up my knees...four scopes...but still played until I was forced to have a hip replacement (30% necrotic) in 2009. Asked the doc two weeks later when I could get back on my skates...his jaw dropped. How long you been playin' this game? Ahhhh...that's why your hip was dying!!!! I could keep playing and have the hip redone in 3 years or quit and have it last 25. Sold all my stuff the next day...done. Physically easy...spiritually devastating.

Aside from some amazing saves over the years, my best moment was playing goal in an indoor over-18 roller league in my mid-50's. Had a full gray beard at that time...got dressed and warmed up before anyone else had arrived. Won the game 3-2 and got back to the locker room. Took off the mask and some 19-year old stood right in front of me and pronounced: "F&&K!!! I just lost to my grandfather!!!" That felt sooooo good...

Talked to the Donjoy brace people about something I could get that would protect the TKR from ever twisting so I could do some light skating with pads to protect the hip...nothing competitive. Their Defiance Single Hinge model will do the job. Custom fit for $900...saving my pennies. I miss the skating so much...

Sounds like you really had fun playing! We have been Season Ticket holders for our local team which started out being CHL, then went to ECHL , now we are SPHL that started last year! This will be the first year we are not doing season tickets! Rob is not happy with any of it! They were the Quad City Mallards now they are the Storm all new players, some actually acted like they could play others not so much! Do we are going to set out this coming season to see if it gets Better! Prob go to a few games! I actually go for the fights 😁😂😁😂! Love a good Hockey fight! Terrible aren't I?

It is the greatest game on the planet!!!! If I didn't have 4 1/2 pounds of metal in me, I'd be playing in an over-70 league right now. Really miss it but the body just fell apart. Enjoy the action!
