Total Knee Replacement 8 weeks Post Op

Hi

I am 8 weeks Post Op and wondered how you were all getting on!!

I am pleased wit my progress other than having what is commonly know as a Bursea behind my Knee, this is causing me pain on bending but mainly through the night.

I am achieving a 140 bend, can walk properly up a full set of stairs going up, but still coming down with both feet on 1 step and need to work on this.

Physio have now reduced my visits to monthly and the consultant is really happy with the 'end' result, albeit i do have to go back in 6 weeks to check the Bursea. i have been told this may be drained or surgically removed if it doesnt go down on its own accord!!

The on going issues i have is through the night i do have pain that keeps me awake and i rarely get a full nights sleep.

For all of you out there who have either just had the Operation or are due too i can only advise to be patient, the pain and disability gets better in my opinion after about 4 weeks, each day after this i found so much improvement, i am back driving, dont use any sticks at all now, and can walk quite a distance, i still have a slight limp when walking and am working hard on 'marching' when i walk advised by physio, apparently if i concentrate on swinging my arms when walking it makes me walk straight without a limp. I am still off work and dont imagine going back for a further 6 weeks. I use an static bike twice daily and try and beat my time each day, this is helping with my muscle wastage.

I could never imagine i would feel this way 4 weeks ago but now i am doing so well i know its been worth it. My scar looks good and is just a thin line although its a bit purple looking, i still have swelling on the knee but not much, and my Knee does look a funny shape!!

I hope you are all doing good and that my experiance helps you with your recovery.

Good luck and stay positive...

All I would say to those who can only dream of Pegs girls 140 bend, is that we are all different, take different time to get where we are going, and have different possibilities of achievment.  140 is exceptional, and most of us will not get there.  I finally got to 130, and I'm happy with that . . .Also, when I really noticed improvement was definitely after six weeks, not four. At four weeks i was stil a useless lump of meat. . . so, please don't think that you have to follow any strict timetable or achieve specific goals . . but! You certainly do have to persist, insist and push yourself to get the damned knee to bend and go straight.

Hi I am 3 1/2 weeks from getting my 1st TKR. I am 38 and very nervous about this entire thing. I have had approx 27 knee surgeries over the past 15 years which includes a Fulkerson realignment. I am being told that since I had that it will make things a little tougher and recovery time a little longer. Can anyone give any thing to ask, expect, and pain levels I am totally against the pain meds. It dr is saying I will need them. I am hoping that the new rx protocol will help with that. Thanks for any input anyone has

Hi - gosh I think you will have a good understanding of the pain after all you have been through. As to pain relief I cannot take anything much due to a stomach issue so used Voltaren suppositories and Paracetemol once out of hospital. At 8 weeks I have no need for them anymore and one big bonus is no addiction issues !!

Remember when you go down the stairs is bad knee first and then the good on the same step.

    Hello

I'm 72 and it has been 12 weeks since my knee replacement. I have 120 degrees movement and I go the the gym 6 days a week. I do only knee excersises and I might be over doing it. My knee area gets quite painful and it is still swollen.  We have a basement area and I go up and down to the basement at least 12 times a day. Sometimes it is hard to fall asleep at night due to the pain

I am envious of your bend smile I am 3 months post op too but stuck at 113 with 3 to go to straighten . You may need to still be icing the knee if it is swelling. I also have steps and go up and down several times a day. My physio says i am lucky and it is good exercise. You may also need to take your pain relief at night to help you to sleep. To me it seems you are doing an amazing job. Well done.

Peg I'm 5 1/2 weeks post up. My pain was easing up. But, now the temperature as dropped into the 30s (in Florida no less) and my knee has started killing me again. Is it normal for the pain to get worse when it gets cold while your in recovery?

Hi .i have just found this forum and have found it very encouraging. I am 5 weeks post op with TKR. I have been walking without a walking aid since week 3. I live in an upstairs apartment so have to do stairs a few times a day. I could walk upstairs (holding on to the stair rail ) just before week 3. Some days my knee is very uncomfortable, and it clicks a bit when l walk. Is this normal. I am expected to be back to work inJanuary 8weeks post op. Is this about right. I am a teaching assistant in a primary school

This is exactly the type of blog I was looking for!!!  Being a nurse-- I kept searching the internet in a way that brought up medical articles vs. patient experiences-- and this time I need to hear real patient experiences!!!  thanks for being here!

I am 5+ weeks post simultaneous bilateral knee replacement and find it very encouraging to hear that the symptoms and issues that I'm experiencing are not so very different from others-- I truly was becoming fearful that perhaps something was wrong with my RT. knee-- it is SO different from the left-- and the idea of having it reopened for a revision is not one I even want to begin to think about!!  I feel overall I'm doing well-- Bend in the left is 130 w/full extension and the Rt. is 126 w/full extension.  I'm not using my cane except when I leave the house-- and I started driving this past week.  BUT-- I am experiencing-- particularly in my Rt. knee-- many of the issues others are reporting.  The "steel-band" like tightness and nerve tingling are driving me crazy-- and I do experience a lot of stiffness particularly in the Rt. knee.  I also notice a clicking and rumbling in the new joint that feels like I'm driving over marbles-- I haven't seen anyone else report that.....  is it odd??  I am just taking over the counter anti-inflammatory medication now....  and occasionally dipehnhydramine for sleep.  My Lyrica ran out yesterday-- which I think may be part of why the tingling seems worse today.  I continue in PT 2x week with mostly strengthening and balance exercises.  I had an under-desk cycle prior to my surgery and have that at home now too and using it several times/day in addition to repeating my exercises generally 2x/day.  Still icing 3-4x day.  I plan to return to a work schedule in the immediate New Year-- just teleworking from home for a couple of weeks.  I am supposed to attend a conference in Texas-- but not sure that I have the stamina for the travel yet...... I do seem to tire easily.  Shopping which I loved until it became too painful remains a less than enjoyable sport (I hate that!!)-- my knees tire and get very stiff and uncomfortable any time I'm on them for too long.    Sleeping seems to go well most of the time-- it's turning from side to side that can be painful-- but this seems like ligament pain and I think that this should pass as I continue to work on strength and endurance.  In the US, simultaneous bilateral TKR is NOT the norm and my physician generally only does 1-2 year-- and TKR is a very big piece of his practice overall.  Most of my medical colleagues including physicians were pretty incredulous at the idea of doing both at the same time,,,,,,  but I often find myself thinking -- "what is all of the noise about??"  I'm happy to report that the initial pain, etc., was less than I had anticipated......  but the recovery timeframe appears to be more than I had anticipated-- and that certainly is a much bigger part of the whole picture than the surgical procedure itself!

I look forward to continuing to follow the posts on this blog to  learn and gain hope and perserverence through them!!  thanks to everyone who is contributing!!

I am an RN, 3 weeks post-op Left knee. Exercise has been pretty good with PT and my pilates. Stiffness, minor swelling, aches at night so sleeping is difficult. Only daily ASA, and aleve and Tylenol for discomfort. Going back to work at 6 weeks with the first 2 weeks 4 hour mornings. I will be on my feet continually so will try thigh ted hose for support. You are doing awesome with both knees.

I have had a clicking and clunking from just about day one and I'm 9 weeks in to this on my left knee, and this is something I didn't have on my right knee last year. I have had problems sleeping through the night with both knees, but my left knee seems to get really stiff at night were my right didn't seem to do this. I had mentioned I rolled over in bed about 5 wks after surgery and felt like I had a catch in the outside of the lower part of knee almost out of the knee. I felt a sharp pain and my knee puffed up on the outside. On my 2 month visit I told the Doc about it and he did x-rays and said everthing looks good, but I still have a lot soreness in that area. So I don't know but wait and hope it goes away with time. I don't know if I should go back to PT and see what they say, because I only went to 1 visit because they didn't think I needed to come. They said I was doing so good that I could rehab on my own and maybe that was a mistake.

I am new to this blog but so glad to have found it. Couldn’t help but notice you mention that you are a nurse for which I am also. I wanted to ask you if the thigh high ted hose helped when you returned to work. All the other symptoms others have mentioned, I have also been experiencing. I am now 10 wks. out from a right total knee. This was the first surgery I have ever needed and no one can really explain or understand the degree of pain and ups and downs of the whole process of healing except those who have gone through it! So everyone’s tips and insights have been very helpful. I have been a bedside nurse for over 35 years and am 62. I do not know if I will even be able to return to the level of work I use to do because it would be back to 12 hr shifts with a lot of walking and need to stand on my feet for prolonged periods of time. Rest periods are a crap shoot, if things are very hectic and crazy there is no time to say “Oh, I have to put my leg up right now”. Therefore I wonder if there are others out there who have similar positions of needing to be on there feet for long periods of time and how they managed? I too am experiencing the “ tight band” around the knee and a lot of stiffness and pain to the back calf area and upper quad area if I’ve been standing for too long or walking in a big grocery store is still a challenge and exhausting. Rest, ice and elevation help especially after PT session or when I’m very sore. It’s been a relief to hear others also still having problems finding a comfortable sleeping position and it’s been a problem I’m still dealing with but as everyone has said, with patience and time I hope things will improve and I have seen improvements over the weeks. But for those who have jobs that demand a lot of time on your feet I’d love to hear how they do it or I may end up taking early retirement and say goodby to bedside nursing! Words of wisdom out there?

Hi Reading this blog, it does seem right TKR and Left TKR are different for some reason.

      Good healing
