Total Knee Replacement Post OP question

I am 2 1/2 weeks post op for total knee replacement. My incision is healing wonderfully but it feels as though it it wrapped with an ace bandage when it is not. Is this normal?

    Hi Michelle,

I'm 3 months post op and mine still feels like that. It's better now then a month ago. I'm getting ready for the other knee to be done at the end of the month. Good luck and speedy recovery. Sounds like you are right on track and healing great.

That is normal. It just takes time to heal. Keep doing your exercises and stretches and be patient. It takes about a year to recover.

Much of the serious damage in surgery is done to this area. Depending on the way your body reacts to healing this will more than likely be the area that will cause you pain and general discomfort the longest.

You can feel a tight band around your knee...totally normal.  Could take 12-18 months to resolve.  Try some Voltaren Gel (RX in the US).  Second-best anti-inflammatory of the planet.  Great at night...works in 15 minutes or so.  The BEST is called "lotion" by the purveyors of the product in certain dispensaries in certain states obtainable by patients in possession of certain medical cards.  Works in FIVE minutes.  Extraordinary ointment...nothing better on the planet.

PS: A loosely-wrapped ACE or a loose knee sleeve would be of great help when the tingling incision site rubs against sheets or clothes.  Very annoying...simple, easy fix.

    Hi Michelle

At 3 1/2 months mine is the same. It's all quite usual. It's a nuisance but what can we do??

I'm looking forward to the day when there is no tight band around my knee & I can walk like I used to 10 years ago!!

Until then we can all only dream......oh well back to the exercises etc.

    All the best

The tightness goes on for a long while but it does gradually get easier. Keep going, plenty of ice, elevation and exercise and also rest when you need to. It's a lengthy process. Best wishes.
