Im a 50 year old woman and a confused one at that.

Over the past few years have had to deal with looking after my mum who had alziehmers, who has now passed away. Difficulties in my marriage we're ok now , hubbies health issues , theres a few, financial problems etc.

I had been feeling quite low went to gp explained how I felt , put on anti depressants , been on them 2 weeks today , think im still adjusting to them.

I dont feel like I could cry at anything which I did before. Im confused because I can be feeling a little brighter and then get a bit anxcious and then low again.

It feels so good when I have had a few hours of feeling somewhere near normal. I just want to feel like my old self.

Im losing wait down to poor appetite, but can anti depressants surpress you appetite?

Keep wondering whether I should be on hrt as experience many menapausal symptoms. Dont know what to do, just hope Im on the right medication.

Any advice?

    Hello Sky

Anti-depressants can certainly take several weeks to settle into your system. They are designed not to make you feel 'happy' as such, but to put you back on a more stable emotional keel.

It's very normal to have highs and lows on them for quite a while, and loss of appetite is very common.

It's a very good sign that you're already experiencing several hours of feeling 'good' - these periods will only get longer, and more frequent.

Try and imagine your brain as a flat car battery, and the anti-depressants like jump-leads - the anti-depressants are really trying very hard to jump-start your brain again, by flooding it with serotonin...but it's taking a while. There's points where you think 'Oh, yes, almost there, almost started' and your brain/battery nearly bursts into action...but then you dip down again, and your brain battery dips.

But you WILL get there, I promise, and your brain battery will soon be purring like a kitten.

    Take Care XXX

    No problem Sky!

I think anxiety is just the most horrible, evil feeling, it really is. I take 30mg of amitriptyline at night to help me deal with a hefty dose of anxiety which arrived out of the blue, just before Xmas. But, actually I think I'd had the dangers signs for a while, after living through an extremely stressful 18 months.

At times I felt I was really going up the wall, I suddenly became scared of just about *everything* really. Just really terrifying, especially as normally I am really self assured and confident.

You WILL get better, I promise but I fully understand how hard it is to be patient, but in just a week or two, you'll be able to look back on today and think 'Well, it's been days and days since I felt like that.'

Thanks I hope so, totally get what your saying about the build up of stress, its as if evarything just got bigger and bigger, and when will it stop . we all need a break from the stresses and strains of modern day life.

If only we could be transported to a lovely sunny island and when we get back our worries will have gone away. I know nice thought but it aint going to happen!

Someday soon Im sure things will start to look a bit brighter.
