I just read an interesting article from 2015 that suggests this is a viable solution for CP patients...and should be pursued as it has a high rate of improving the quality of life and putting the islets from the pancreas into the liver works in prevent diabetes (which is otherwise, a given if one's pancreas is removed or CP progresses so that the pancreas goes necrotic.)   As I have a surgical consult at the end of the month, I WILL be asking about this option.  I can't tell you what the cost might be, but there may be programs you can qualify for that would reduce those costs.  The cost of synthetic enzymes has thrown me for a loop, but I am on Medicare, so at a certain point, my part D coverage will take over more than just 55%.

      Hi diane,

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes I agree the enzymes are expensive. However, im pretty lucky because I live in quebec so medicare covers a big portion of the cost. On the other, Specialists for chronic pancreatitis and the TPAIT are not as accessible :S. Most docs ive dealt with dont know much about the disease and rely on old school criteria for the disease so its hard to get a diagnosis. Please let me know how your surgical consult goes. Stay strong smile

My surgical consult was interesting.  He is a very conservative surgeon and thinks I have many treatment options to consider before any surgery more serious than an ERCP every 3 months or so.  I realise I never answered your original question about cost.  That 2015 article I found estimated the total treatment cost for Chronic Pancreatitis sufferers was about $174thousand over an average lifespan of 11.5 years.  If TPAIT surgery is done, the same total treatment cost is about $152 thousand over an average lifespan of 15.3 years.  I think the standard treatment costs are because of the inevitability of diabetes with standard treatment options is nearly certain.
