tramadol

I had a car crash 20 months ago and the physio has said there is no more she can do. I have been prescribed co-dydramol & amatryptaline by doc for pain in my neck, back, shoulder, hip & leg but couldnt get on with amatry. Went to pain mgmt clinic & prescribed 50mg tramadol. Got on ok with them but didnt seem to be doing much so after 3 weeks doc increased to 100mg which i started taking Fri. Last night (Sun) went to bed at 7pm, exhausted, but then kept waking in night with hot & cold sweats & palpatations. Got headache, feel sick, really weak, shakes & breathing dodgy. I work full time & have a 4 & 7 year old, I need to be able to function properly!! Have spent most of morning crying, though dont know why. At wits end as what to do for the best.

Sounds like the trammadol either doesn't suit you or the increase was too great, I know it only come in multiples of 50mg. How bad is the pain? Go back to GP and discuss it with him. Maybe try something different that's not an opiate.

Trammadol can be a devil to get off. Especially if you're on it long term.

    Be well

    Hi Nanette,

With your Tramadol are you taking them all at the same time? 100mg could be split over a 12 hour period. Tramadol does have various side-effects with different people, I used to be on 50mg and after about 2 weeks it was increased to 100mg.

I do not take Tramadol 100mg all at once - I take 50mg in the morning with food, around 10am and then again at 10pm at night. It can make a difference with some medicines, by breaking the dosage up throughout the day.

Other people on here will tell you their experiences I expect, because many are taking Tramadol.

Hi thanks for your feedback. I was on slow release 50mg taken twice a day but these have been increased to 100mg twice a day. Its a good job my husband had today off so he could look after the kids as i was no use. I live in a 3 story house and had to stop 3 times walking up the stairs , then lie down when i got to the top! I am going to stop taking them. I would rather put up with the pain than feel like this. Going to try & get in to docs tomorrow than feel like this. In a way I'm glad my husband saw me like that as he dont think he would have believed I could be so rough just from taking a tablet!

      Hi Nanette,

Perhaps, taking the Tramadol down to 50mg would suffice, than what you are taking at present. You can take Amatryptaline 100mg before bedtime, however some people do not get along with this medication on its own, which can cause nausea and acid reflux in which case your doctor probably prescribe something like Lansoprazole to counter-act the side-effects.

I tried this before now, and it worked fine, but the Tramadol I 50mg at night and 50mg in the morning. Tramadol is best taken either side of a 30 minute gap of any other medications, because it can multiply side-effects of other medications, which many people think is the main cause of Tramadol. If it is taken correctly it will still have side-effects, but much less. I used to get a nauseous feeling on just 50mg.

Tramadol is one of those medications that takes awhile for your body to adjust to, the same applies to actually coming off it.

Being in a 3 storey place must be difficult to cope with, I used to have problems with just a 2 storey house. In the end and because of my health we managed to get a 3-bedroom bungalow (all on the level).

I hope your doctor gets you sorted.

      Regards,

When I first started taking TramadolI had an unexplainable worrying feeling which seemed a bit odd as the Amitriptyline (10mg) I take are often used as an antidepressant. I can take upto 100mg Tramadol four times a day but at present am taking only at night. I sleep for a few hours then wake for a short while, then back to sleep .....and so on all night. Not perfect but manageable.

The initial unwanted feelings I got soon passed, but, the general tiredness I feel is still with me. Like a lot of medications, It takes some getting used to.

If I take 200mg Tramadol, as I have on rare occasions (when the pain just won't go) I get as high as a kite but sleep a lot sounder.

I think Tramadol is a wonderful thing if used properly, but if misused it can be very dangerous.

nannette you should be provided with effective pain relief and it sounds as if your gp needs to sort out further this for you and return to them for further advise. Do you have an occupational health dept at work if so go and see them as they will assist with sorting things out and you not doing work that aggravates your problems, or maye you should be on sick leave. There are other drugs that can be tried. hope this helps. Good luck

Thanks for your feedback. I was put on tramadol by the pain management doc and unfortunately when i went to see my doc he hadnt received the report. I have just read the report & he suggests trying tricyclic drugs nortriptyline or imipramine if the tramadole doesnt do the trick, although I have prev tried amitriptyline which i couldnt get on with either. To be honest I think I would rather just put up with the pain than feel as dreadful & non functioning as I have today

    Hi Nannette,

I've been on Tramadol before and it makes you very sleepy so that is to be expected. However, coming off of it is a nightmare so cosult your doctor before you decide it's not for you.

Let me know how you get on.

      Hi Peter,

Tramadol does cause drowsiness, and this effect is well known to most people. I try and keep to a low dosage as possible by using Tramadol and Amatryptaline at night.

I take Amatryptaline 100mg for pain relief as well, and 50mg of Tramadol, however if I wake up in the morning in pain I tend to take 50 mg of Tramadol.
