Have any of you out there who have used Tramadol experienced the feeling of wanting to cry even though your not sad, I started to experience this after taking it for the first time to night and it scares me a bit since I have a history of depression and anxiety and now this medication may be causing me to randomly cry 😢

No, actually just the opposite. It works like an antidepressant on top of pain control for me.

    Hi Mary,

Tramadol is an odd drug as it is an atypical opioid because it also acts as an SNRI (Serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). SNRIs are a class of antidepressant, which are less commonly used than SSRIs (such as Prozac/Fluoxetine, Citalopram, Sertraline etc). I would guess that your experience is linked to this action of the drug. When I was on Citalopram I used to often feel like I wanted to cry but that it was blocked from coming out. I don't know if this is what you are experiencing.

When I've taking Tramadol it's usually given me a marked improvement in mood for a few hours. Are you experiencing an initial period of good mood, followed by the sad feelings, as that would be more consistent with the effects of Tramadol?

Basically, drugs that mess with your serotonin system can cause all kinds of physical and mental effects, so it's nothing to cause any concern, but if you need pain relief and find that Tramadol is making you sadder then ask your doctor about a different drug, there are plenty of options. Given my personal struggle with opioid addiction I'd be remiss if I didn't add that you should always be cautious with using opioids/opiates for anything other than short term use and try and look for longer term alternatives.

    All the best!

    Hello Mary.

I had something very similar with morphine. I literally could not stop crying. I broke down at everything. I also have a history of depression and anxiety. It wasn't until I came down in my morphine (I was on huge doses of the stuff) that I realised that this was why I could not keep it together. Don't get wrong, I still cry, but nothing like at the same level as before. Unfortunately, this seems to be one of the side effects of being on opioids. -xx-
