Tramadol for tkr pain?

If you were prescribed Tramadol for post tkr pain what was your dosage and experience? I had trouble with Percocet and was switched to 50 mg of Tramadol every four hours, it was not so effective.

Tramadol worked for me. Same dose as you. I finally found very fabulous Hydromorphone. I could not tolerate endone or other generic stuff they pump into us. I was unmedicated for 48 hours post op except for what remained of spinal block. I vomited for 2 days until someone decided I must be allergic to something and they ceased endone and a pain specialist suggested hydromorphone. All the usual hand wringing about addictions etc. But I came off it by myself after 6 weeks. One thing is for certain. If we are not medicated correctly, we suffer. Seems to me that they try the cheapest, most tolerated drugs then move to others when necessary. I hope to never again experience such discomfort.

Sorry I digressed. I am probe to digressing. Tramadol was the drug I used after hydromorphone. It masked my pain admirably. No problem coming off it. I have been addicted to social lubricants and found them harder to wean myself off. Booze and fags.

Talk to your doc about your post-op meds.  He should have you on a bigger opioid right after surgery like hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco) or oxycodone (Percocet).  We're all different but most of us need something stronger than Tramadol for the first 2-4 weeks after surgery.

I had tramadol 50mg four a day , then was changed to tramadol prolonged release capsules 1x 200mg twice daily , also Diclofenac , an anti inflamatory . I think the slow release tramadol helped to control the pain better than the 50mg 4 times daily.

Might ask doc about those as I don't think the tramadol do anything apart from stopping me sleeping

Tramadol did absolutely nothing for me, regardless the dose. Oxycone, first two weeks but side effects terrible, had a to take two more pills to combat sire effects.

I found after that two Tylenol with one benedryl was a charm. Best of luck.

Benedryl is the expensive brand name for cheap, generic diphenhydramine.  It usually comes in 25 mg capsules...the dosage is two capsules or 50 mg.  As a true antihistamine, it has a side effect of drowsiness.  It is the additional content to all the "PM" products (like Tylenol PM) because you take it at bedtime to help you get to sleep.  If you don't need the pain killing effects of acetaminophen or the anti-inflammatory properties of ibuprofen, just take straight diphenhydramine 1/2 hour before bed...turn off all electronics...read a book.  It just makes you drowsy...it does not actually put you to sleep.  You have to do that yourself by being ready for sleep.

PS: I was married to a pharmacist for 25 years...you pick up stuff...

Percocet is OXYcodone with acetaminophen.  The same strength opioid would be Vicodin or Norco which is HYDROcodone plus acetaminophen.  According to NIH, they are equivalent pain relievers at the same dosages.  You may do better on the latter, although NIH found a higher occurrence of constipation with the hydrocodone.  Tramadol, while technically an opioid, is way less powerful a painkiller.  Docs will usually prescribe it after you don't need the heavy-duty stuff anymore.  Think of it as a transition drug between oxy/hydro and straight-up ibuprofen.

PS: Hydromorpone (Dilaudid) is way more powerful than either hydrocodone or oxycodone. About 7X as powerful as morphine. Docs don't use it the US that often because of respiratory concerns and almost never let you take it home.  I get it in the ER when I have a kidney stone...nothing else works on me for that problem.  I would LOVED to have had Dilaudid during my first two weeks home...outta luck on that.

28 ops in 17 years (mostly minor but hip replacement, knee replacement and 3 spine surgeries we kind of major) teaches you a lot.  Plus my ex-wife (25 years married) was a pharmacist while my current wife was a nurse for 30 years.  Yeah...after all of that, you get to know a lot of stuff...

I was prescribed the same dose of tramadal as you. It was not as effective at controlling pain as the Percocet.

Yeah, the 50mg I took left me still with considerable pain. It took the edge off and was better than nothing but that was about it.

I was given 50mg Tramadol to take every four hours then every 6 hours. Also Methocarbamol twice a day. It worked well for me. I'm at 14 weeks and take two Tylenol a day and one ibprophen. Ibprophen makes my heart skip beats so I'm careful about that. I'm doing well, only stiffness but not much pain.
