Tramadol How Addictive

Posted , 63 users are following.

I was prescribed tramadol 6 weeks ago, but having read in the forum how addictive they are I am considering stopping them, although they do help with my back pain. Has anyone being given an alternative to these drugs, and if so are they effective. I will appriciate your replies.

Thanks

I've been on tramadol since 2008 and have had no problem with addiction. I used to take 100 mg. 4 times a day and now take it 2 times a day and only at night. Cutting down was no issue. I didn't do it slowly. I'm surprised, having read many of the blog entries, at the number of people who take tramadol for other reasons other than nerve pain. It seems to do nothing for muscle pain or arthritis, bone pain. I don't understand doctors prescribing it for anything other than nerve pain. Until I read this blog, I hadn't heard of addictions to tramadol. I'm not an addictive person in general but my quality of life, despite severe nerve pain is 9. I attribute my self proclaimed high rating to a combination of Lyrica, tramadol and an implanted microstimulator. Without tramadol, I would certainly be addicted - to alcohol.

take it for the pain..you won't heal if you are in terrible pain.  just be sure to wean off slowly, and don't take more than you need.  I'm struggling with weaning off but think it is partly due to a former addiction of oxycontin.  I had a horse i was riding flip over backwards and land on top of me.  I've had several surgeries, steroid injections, PT, traction...I could go on and on.  Recently i started having pain just under my ribs.  Doc removed my gallbladder.  BUT...it took 6 months for them to figure out what was causing the pain...so doc started me on tramadol.  Didn't think it would bother me cuz it was not a narcotic.  Well....now it is and here I am going through withdrawal again.  I'm a 53 year old grandmother.  I'm not a partier.  I don't want to get high.  I just wanted the pain to go away.  When I finally get off the tramadol.  I will deal with pain the remainder of my life.  Addiction is a terrible thing.  (can't believe i'm going through this again)   Anyway, sorry i got off track.  On my pitty pot again.    YOU will be fine.  Just take as needed and wean off when you are better.  Hope you feel GREAT very soon.

I seemed to be sensitive to Tramadol- I was on 50mg following hip replacement, and every time the next dose was due, I started getting anxiety, and withdrawal symptoms.

Kicked it into touch, and put up with the symptoms for a day - SO glad to be off it now.

Wow iv read every thing on this subject here and abit other places . Im struggling cause I have such a high toleranc. To pain meds im chronic with pain but daloten or how ever its spelt i have been given in shots and it had no effect with pain even though I was told there is nothing stronger. I asked to get on next best and morphin was it helps alot bu. Not for long after a week it had no eeffect or a high I could take 300 milagrams and wonder when or why is this not helping. And the normal pain killers the same and asked to get on tramadol stricly cause it helped with pain and it did not make you brain dead but gave u opposit. Motivated and iItake aderal for my ADD. And. This also helped that but any way Im a lifer in cchroni. Pain and iI get no full release of pain and discomfort if im not on 1000 milagrams or more im supose to take 4 /50 mil a day so iI suffer alot of the time with pain and when I finally have to take them I crush 20 50 mil at least to enjoy some pain release with very little feeling of a high. Effect. And when im out I just have to be miserable till Iget new script im not using them to abuse them i just ddon't want to have pain or complain and be crabby with every one cause Im im in pain im not sure what kinda solution iI could get with my problem iI'm fed up 36 and unable to perform light duties work part time im just trying to be productive and not a burden im just finding this out after years with pain and one back surgery

I feel you. Chronic pain for 2 years here.

My conclusion after too many Chinese research and experimentation to list here. Is to come off the pain meds!

Target the root cause if the pain, be relentless in finding it, don't accept any response from your medical professionals that just tackles the symptoms.

For tramadol which Im now nearly off (65 mg / day now), one consultant asked how much does tramadol relieve my pain. It took me a few weeks to answer really, it takes it down maybe half a notch, so from level 8 pain to 7.5, from 8.5 to 8 maybe. That is not with it for me, so I stopped taking tramadol for pain relief and started tapering off a couple of months ago.

The withdrawal so far has been far less bad than coming off gabapentin.

Dont believe the pain pill myth, find other ways. Research and try things and never give up...

      Good luck.

Oh my goodness I feel u ten years and I can't cope a day without my trams for my back

I found them addictive, I was getting 'withdrawl' symptoms about 30 mins before the next dose was due.  I changed to codeine for my second operation, and had no problems with them.

It all depends on your body, we're all different, and have different tolerances.

I've been taking it for years. When I run out/low I have a few issues like shaking. To lower my dosage I just start taking less & suffer through a little discomfort.

    Thanks for your post!

Stick with it.  Until something better comes along - and it will one day - it is a really effective pain killer.  I use 4 x 50mg daily and the withdawal can be bad news.  It teaches me not to allow the tabs to run out.

I suufer with Chronic spinal pain (Gross deterioration of the lumbar spine and severe facet joint arthrosis) and it huirts a lot.  My wife, bless her, realises that everything revolves around my pain and how successful I am at managing it.  At the moment. paind management is not good, mainly because the pain is winning!  I use 50mg tramadol capsules and take 4 per day.  The side effects may be bad, but I have tried kicking it and have found poiut what an effective pain killer it really is!  Cocodamol won't come anywhere near!

I found Hydrocodon-Acaminophin 10-325 or called Norco or Vicodine, is the best for me, I never experianced any dizziness or sleepy or anything that interfered with my driving to work and work 10 hours straight and still full of energy. In the morning I take 1 pill with full glass of water and have food 15 mins later I feel good and enrgetic right away. 5 hrs later I take another one and that should make my day. No sie affects, nothing, been taking Hydrocodon for over three years everyday, I can't say anything but good things about it. I ran out 2 days ago, my back pain came back, I don't get to see my doctor till next week, I had someramadol from 2 years ago they expired Jan 2016 I took one pill 1 hr ago, I feel dizzy already and the pain still the same, I had an accident 3 years ago 4 discs are moved in my lower spine, did not want to risk a 50/50 operation, I found Vicodine and I am hapy with it, I can't breath very well with Tramadol, and the name Trama scares me. Good luck my friend, Try Hydrocodon you will like it.
