Transferring from boot to shoes

I’m a little over 10 weeks post op orif tib/ fib with dislocation. I’m just starting to walk with the boot with no crutches. Lots of pain. Nothing sharp just pain.  I’m just curious on transferring to shoes,is the pain going to be much worse or about the same? How long for most to go from boot to shoes?

    Hi Michelle.

I was post op 5 months before I could walk without any aid. I went into shoes with one crutch to aid me and then a walking stick. My ankle injury was the worst kind and I was 59 at the time. You are only early days. It all takes time but you will get there. The pain is to be expected too. It's a rotten injury. All the best and don't worry.

Hi MsCamboot...I just read your post saying it was 5 months before you could walk without any aid. I also broke my ankle ...fibula and tibia..had surgery 3 months ago with plate and screws. I am now out of boot and in brace with shoe, walking slowly with a cane, and going to PT twice a week.  I just turned 72 but have always been VERY active and busy, and this has really just eaten my lunch! I have not had one single day in 3 months without pain, and now that I’m weight bearing I’m having terrible hot burning pain in my foot, especially at night. I have always had a high tolerance for pain, but lately I just break down and cry because I’m so worn out with it and especially when I’m up all night with the throbbing pain. The dr has given me Gabapentin for what he is calling nerve pain in the foot, but it really isn’t doing much. My question to you since you said your injury was the worst kind is did you experience any of this, and if so, how long did it last and what did you do for it? I keep counting my blessings because it is definitely better and the break shows it is healed now, but I just want the pain to stop so I can walk without any aid like you said.  Thanks for any info you can give me....

Janny I am at the same stage as you. HAve the brace(Stirrup splint). I'm back to work -this is my third week) I work 12 hour shifts and my foot (and lower leg)is swollen and painful at night too. I use massage techniques given to me by my PT to drain the swelling (its fluid) from my foot ankle and lower leg(. Its the swelling that causes the pain)then ice the whole ankle with  wraparound ice for 20 minutes. It really helps and the swelling goes down fast.

?I'm 63 and super active like you -I was doing my daily 2 miles with my dog when I got injured and broke my ankle-so I know what you mean about this eating your lunch! I too cant wait to walk normally like I used to.
