Trapped nerve??
Posted , 10 users are following.
Sorry to keep posting about pain all the time but this morning the pain has gone from the groin area to the crease of the thigh at the side - where hip is. It's like it's a trapped nerve and I honestly can't move! It's like it gets stuck. Then all of a sudden it seems to clear and I got from the kitchen to the lounge with no pain at all. Then it shot back as quickly as it went and it's so sharp it made me actually cry out! 😫😫😫. When it's like that Intese I cannot even move. I'm just stuck. If anyone on here has experienced this sudden excruciating pain is there any movement you've found helpful to release the trapped nerves?

Your hip is in the groin - that is where they replace the ball & socket - the side of your body, what we are used to calling the hip, is part of the pelvis but not the actual joint itself. Don't know what you mean by the crease of the thigh?
the pain sounds horrible, and disabling. I don't yet have experience to tell you what to do about it, so will shut up!

My pain is sometimes like this and they gave me small amounts of diazepam, treating it as a muscle spasm. Worth investigating? It did help. So long as I don't overdo the walking of course. X

Hi Sarah
I see you are pre op? I'm sorry dear, but this is called "welcome to the world of needing a hip replacement"! I can see from your other posts that you know it will come but don't want it to be here yet. Well, I'm afraid were mostly all been there, and the simple fact is that it's time or past time, and it won't get better. And I'm not saying that to make you feel worse. It's just that most of us, when we just arrive at that stage, go through the "it can't be all that bad, and surely we can manage a bit longer before it is that bad" stage.
It's almost certainly not a trapped nerve - it's the bone on bone pain, and it's excruciating. I notice that in a previous post you mention having spurs. That's probably your culprit. Theses are bony growths that shouldn't be there, and in the hip joint they will catch on the joint, producing exactly what you have described. Although pain killers will help a little, they won't do much for this type of thing. It's kind of like taking a codeine then cutting your finger - the finger still hurts even though you took the painkiller already! Although for a different cause (my hip bone died and was crumbling) I know about this type of pain - before my hip replacement I was on high levels of morphine patches, and even that didn't stop the pain.
I'm afraid this is the stage you have got to. Drugs can help alleviate the issues, but I doubt you'll find many people who can tell you they solve the pain - there is still pain and sometimes quite a lot of it. There is only one real answer, and that is to make the decision, and get yourself booked in. Believe me, you will not regret it when you come out the other side. Yes, there are sometimes complications. This is major surgery and not without risk. But it is everyday surgery and enormously successful. Once done, you will wonder why you didn't run into it! And this pain you have now will be gone.

I can't get myself booked in Beth because I can't afford to go private. But I'm definitely going to try & get a docs appointment tomorrow as it's all getting too much. Thanks for advice 👍

...... I'm not sure where exactly these bone spurs are so will ask GP if she thinks they are the cause of these sharp shooting pains. All I can say is my hip must be in quite a state for the pain to get so bad so quickly. 😟

Mine got that bad that quickly. It isn't uncommon. I don't know where your are but around here the waiting lists for hip replacements on NHS are only three months. And toy should look at choose and book options - in most places there are options to have NHS treatment in private hospitals. Around here there are several private hospitals doing NHS treatment. My friend got referred by her GP four weeks ago and she already has an appointment for the replacement to be done in May at the same hospital I had my treatment done privately.

I live in Clacton on Sea in Essex and two weeks ago I had a letter to say I would be seen at The Oaks (private hospital) in Colchester as an NHS patient. That letter came a week after docs referral. But I've heard nothing since. So all in all I had XRay results by my doctor 3 weeks ago and had the letter a week after. But I'm still booking another appt with her as the pain is really dreadful.

At least things sound as though they are moving forwards for you. Perhaps as you will be at a private hospital you may get seen sooner. Here's hoping.

hi arah,
i agree with beth - the pain will not go away, sweetheart -
i am assuming that you don't have medical insurance (NHS) and have to go the private route ?--- that is bad ..
Does your GP have any suggestions ?
I am sorry that I can't give you any other advice ---
You can come here anytime you need to vent okay ...
big warm hug

Hi Sarah ....I'm on the waiting list for a THR, I was born with hip dysplasia... got it fixed at age of three, but now at 49 I'm bone on bone, Limp and can't walk far.... I don't have the excruating pain you have, but my hip does get very sore moreso if I walk any distance at all. I have not had so much groin pain as pain throbbing nearer the outer side of my hip bone though it does vary and move around the hip area. I know your talking about pain relief as in tablets, I wondered if it would be worth asking your Dr for a cortisone jab to reduce any inflammation there and maybe help a little. I've had that several times and I've also been in hospital getting an injection deep in my hip between the joint, they did this in theatre, to reduce inflammation for the life of me I can't remember what it was called, but I did get some relief from this and the cortisone I got in the Drs office, not a long term solution I know but might give you some relief meantime.
The other thing I sometimes use is a tens machine to help the muscles around my hip joint, doesn't make a huge difference but again it sometimes takes the edge off.
There is is nothing worse than being in pain, I hope you feel better soon

That's a lovely reply to read Lizbet, thank you. My problem is intermittent attacks of SHOOTING pains at the top of my outer thigh where the hip bone joins the thigh. One minute I'm walking along ok the next a searing pain shoots through that joint and it's so bad I sometimes cry out which is embarrassing if people are walking by. So I now walk very very slowly when I'm able to walk. It's like I'm being stabbed right in that joint. As soon as I sit the pain goes. That's why I thought it was a trapped nerve because it's in just one isolated spot when I walk. In the night it's a different story. The pain is in my groin and front of thigh and it's impossible to turn over without crying out. Happy days eh!

Highly unlikely. Sarah had no hardware as she hasn't yet had a hip replacement!

Hi Sarah..., My friend had massive problems with shoulder pain and the joint there, she often complained about nerve pain, and said it was like electric shocks shooting going down her neck and arm when it was at its worst. Know we are speaking about a different joint but that sounds similar, I know she got some relief from cortisone but again I not saying that for definite in your case it's just a thought, think sometimes you will try anything to get even a small bit of relief. Can't think what else to suggest ice, hot Water bottle on your hip, though be careful not too hot, Id like to think when you visit the Dr he would be able to suggest something even to help you a wee bit until you can get a hip replacement.
Take care ... Lizbet x
