Trapped wind and constipation. Effective medication?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I was diagnosed with IBS 7 years ago. Over the years it's mainly been IBS-D, but occasionally I would have constipation. I was prescribed Mebeverine, but it didn't seem to make much difference, so finished up not taking any medication at all, just trying to manage the IBS with diet. Now, over the past few months the constipation has got worse and I've developed extremely painful trapped wind, which makes me feel quite unwell. When it's painful, my abdomen seems to swell and becomes very tender to touch.

If others have IBS-C, what medication has helped you, particularly with regard to trapped wind? I'm thinking about going back to the GP.

I did exactly the same as you - when Mebeverine didn't work (10+ years ago) I tried to deal with it myself by trying every natural remedy under the sun for IBS-C but my symptoms gradually got worse (particularly with the onset of peri-menopause). Got to the stage where I just didn't want to eat during the day due to the pain, discomfort and plain old embarrassment. Saw a new GP a couple of months ago and she suggested I try Alverine (and was surprised I hadn't been offered it before). I take 2 tablets a day (or 3 if I feel really bunged up) and its really helped. I still have to be careful what I eat but I have a BM much more regularly (and they're much softer) and the bloating and trapped wind is much less. I don't get those awful internal grumbles and groans anywhere near as much. I wouldn't say it's a miracle cure, but it's a vast improvement.

I drink a tea with sienna once a week and started cooking with lentils. Made a big difference for me.

Thank you both for your replies. I've never heard of Alverine, but that is definitely worth knowing. I must admit I haven't discussed the IBS with a doctor for years and really didn't think they could offer me anything more than Mebeverine. I'll also have to try the tea you suggested, Colette.

I take alverine and it definitely helps with trapped wind, constipation and that horrible discomfort that you sometimes get with diarrhea. But also deflatine is pretty good for trapped wind and you don't need a prescription for it. If I have trapped wind I find lying on my stomach or crouching can help.
