Trapped wind or appendicitis?

i'm a 21 male with history of stomach problems such as Gerd and currently on medication for it.

Last night I was awoken to terrible cramping around my lower abdomen to the point I nearly went to the A&E. The pain was generalized and only subsided when I curled into the fetal position in bed. The pain subsided slightly through the night and I went to the doctors today who said it was a bout of IBS and could be connected to my other issues.

He has given me some tablets to help the IBS, but I have never had these symptoms before nor any symptoms of IBS.

I have had bloating and the pain now only occurs when I move but it is fixed in the lower right quadrant and i'm worried it could be an appendicitis.

I know you shouldn't look to the internet for answers but I have been to the doctors and trust them but I cant stop thinking the worst.

Symptoms i have:

- slight bloating

- pain to right lower quadrant which only occurs when i move, feels like cramp, had it most of today

- Difficulty passing wind

- diarrhea

- when I press the area the pain increases but at this stage the pain is probably 4/10

I don't know whether to go A&E or not, I've had 2/3 tablets for the IBS with minimal improvement. Any help? is this IBS? My grandad also had an Appendicitis.... is it hereditary?

Hi stirjam.Bloating is usually because of the bacterial in your stmach being out of synch. Google about gut flora. The passing wind etc goes with that. It can be very painful but it can be just trapped wind but if the gut flora was right it wouldnt happen usually.

I had appendicitis last year. Went to a&e and was told I was constipated. Went home and took laxatives. Got worse rang doctors and was fitted in at surgery 6pm. My pain had got rapidly worse. Docs called for ambulance to surgery. Had an emergency op. Had cancer inside the appendix the weight of which had caused the appendix to twist and cause gangrene. Pain was in same place as yours. Don't want to scare you. If pain gets worse get yourself to a& e. Don't let them fob you off without a proper diagnosis.

Thanks for your reply. I really do feel fobbed off most of the time when I go to the Doctors even if its for other problems. Each Doctor contradicts the other, It's so frustrating and worrying at the same time.

I'm presuming your pain was constant? I can only feel my pain when I move, but its still not good that the pain is on the right hand side and hasnt moved all day. Either way, I will not hesitate to go to a&e now as i'm just fed up of the whole process of it all.

I haven't had appendicitis before but I thought that if you have it you typically feel the pain in the opposite side to where it is so your left side would hurt?

    Firstly - poor you!

I had the most horrendous pain just like you describe and went to the GP, was sent straight up to a&e with suspected appendicitis and according to the doctor there it was a UTI?!

I get the pain still now and am certain it's to do with IBS. No IBS meds have helped me. I settle with a hot water bottle, lying on my side and applying pressure when the pain gets worse (mine contracts). Each bout of this is usually 25-48h for me. If you can get some cocodamol I find it takes the edge off.

    hope this helps! X

Go read my post I just recently posted. Do you resonate with it at all?

I agree that your symptoms definitely need to be checked out.  Do you have a family physician?  If so, can't you make an appointment and just get there yourself?  What country do you live in?  In America there are places called Urgent Care, too.  They are far cheaper than going to the ER but will advise you if you need to go there. You are no longer a child and must learn to act on your own behalf, be your own advocate.  Should you be suffering from appendicitis [and I am not saying that I know you are] the worst case scenario is that it will burst and you will end up with a life threatening problem.  Many years ago there was a family I knew who had a lovely teenage daughter who was suffering from appendicitis but was not taken to get medical help in time by her parents.  She unfortunately died.  I am not telling you this in order to frighten you.  I wrote it so you would understand that sometimes you can't just take "no" for an answer and must assert yourself, take matters into your own hands for your own good.
