Travelling via plane

Hi All,
Hope you are doing well and have a good day with MD. I'm just looking for a little advice and thought that this may be the best place to ask! I have a summer holiday booked which I will be travelling via plane. I really struggle with flying, not in the sense that I am frightened of flying but that my MD runs havoc.. My ears feel very blocked, my hearing reduces significantly, my balance is dreadful and I get pains below my ears and down my neck.
Does anyone else suffer with flying, is there anything that you do which helps to ease the journey? looking forward to all your suggestions!

Hello!
I can't add anything to your discussion because I'm one of the fortunate ones. I hadn't flown anywhere since 1983 and was way too scared with my MD and avoided it for decades. My nephew died unexpectedly and I had to get to my sister in Denver quickly so I got on a plane. I was so afraid that I would be a puddle of pain and vertigo when I got there but was pleasantly surprised that I didn't incur extra symptoms. I was told to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate so I drank a lot of water. It actually seemed like my symptoms were less up in the mountains, I don't know if that was the difference in air pressure or the adrenaline of assisting a loved one during a tragedy. Since no two days are exactly the same I will fervently hope that this flight will be different for you. All the best~Mary

Hi Mary, I'm really sorry for your loss, but glad the flight wasn't problematic for you. I'm going to try the ear plugs that other have suggested so hopefully I'll be ok to fly again! All the best

Hey Rell,
I often fly all over the show. I remember phoning the ENT and asking him if I could fly and he said "it should not be a problem" - well it was a huge problem, not only did I have pain and dizziness from the pressure, but also a panic attack.
And so you learn, research and adapt. This is the process I go through when knowing I have to fly.
Make sure you get enough good sleep before you depart and return.
Hydrate well
I use MQ motion patches
I take 2 drops of cannabis oil about an hour before I take off (no pun intended) to relax me because I do not use any chemical medication
Over the years you learn to meditate and breath properly; you must trick your mind otherwise you start thinking of all kind of events which could happen and you do not need adrenalin during the flight
I mask my tinnitus by listening to music, just enough as not to hear the ringing because then your mind concentrates on the noise level
Gently try and pop your ears going up and landing
I honestly believe its all in the mind and the thought of a panic attack or vertigo, or can I do it or whatever - take some precautions but moreover think about all those wonderful things you are going to enjoy on holiday, so why not enjoy the flight as well.
Have a great holiday and enjoy the flying!

Hello,
Yes, I suffer from flying. I have been helped a lot with a product called Earplanes. They are little plugs that you put in your ears (I wear mine throughout the entire flight and don't remove them until the cabin door is opened) which helps balance the pressure. I also use a nasal spray (Afrin) about an hour before takeoff. Both these have helped me greatly.

Unfortunately Afrin doesn't seem yo be directly available in the UK, but I've got a medication check booked with my doctor so hopefully will be able to find something similar. Thanks for your help!

one time when my sinuses were pretty clogged I had a sharp pain above my eyes upon the plane descending drink water in the days prior to flight and stay relaxed as much as possible. cabin pressure can mess with sinuses which are connected to our ears.....I am not a doctor but thats what works from and I fly quite often

I don't typically suffer with sinus issues, but there is no harm in taking a Sudafed and I'm willing to try anything any everything. During my last holiday in was bed bound for 2 days due to ME but hoping that this time will be better! Thanks so for your help!

Hello Rell, In response to your posting I would like to say That Me myself cannot fly, The movements of the plane and high altitudes cause me far too many issues to travel. You mentioned the fullness in your ears, I did find some satisfaction in having tubes placed in my ears to combat that pressure. The tubes helped in that respect, but as for the plane movement, meclizine can help some with motion sickness, but it still renders me out of control to fly. So I,m grounded personally, but if you can withstand the symptoms to travel I would like to see you get that summer vacation. The trip might be hard for you but you would probably gain some stress relief enjoying your vacation time. I wish you the best with whatever you decide to do. The great folks of this site will be behind you during your trip. ø¤º°`°º¤ø-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.Bertman •:*'''''*:•-:¦:-ø¤º°`°º¤ø

Hi Bertman, I'm sorry to hear that your unable to travel but thank you so much for your kind words. I have been prescribed Betahistine but also advised that I can take regular travel sickness tablets or double my dose on bad days, hopefully with the ear plugs, travel sickness meds and sinus relief that others have suggested I'll be ok. But since being diagnosed this forum has been very helpful, MD can be very difficult to deal with but it's comforting to know that this forum is here with people like your self.
