Treadmill and THR

Posted , 8 users are following.

Someone told me that it's not recommended that a person with THR shouldn't use a treadmill.

Any thoughts on this before I buy one?

Hope all of you are doing well!

Actually that's exactly what my physical therapist told me to use. Just stay slowly for shot times. Then work up ad you heal.Hugs

    Hi Miele,

Like with everyhting else , there are different opinions about this ... My PT said "no" to me when I asked her if I could use the treadmill - by that time I was 10 weeks post-op - I think there might be a bigger risk of falling - you are not really in control of moving your legs - the belt is moving and you are trying to keep up while still in the early stages of retraining your brain to walk properly -

Do you have a physical therapist you can ask ? and if you buy one, please have someone with you when you use it ...

I have not heard anything negative about a stationary bike ...

I think the idea is not to limit the impact on your joints, running is not good for your joints even on a running machine. My consultant when I asked what I could manage afterwards, said cycling, swimming, low impact sports would be better for your joints and for your keeping your hip joint in good order for as long as possible.

typo correction ~ it should be 'the idea is to limit the impact on your joints'

    Hey Miele

Greetings ...like TEDS stockings there are lots of confusing advices given by experts...all claiming the holy grail of what is correct.

My own reflection is to be sensible yes, but also to use new body and hip well cos it needs the exercises as part of the healing process. So as Renee says...falling off a treadmill is a danger to be aware of! So I use the ones at the gym with handrails! I'm also beginning to jog a little too. I did some african drum n dance yesterday...loving making 180 degree turns at 6 monhs which a year ago was impossible.

So...think thru the treadmill idea. I had no restrictions there....only bungie jumping.

    Enjoy your new life

    Cheers

It's not the jumping mic but the bottom before being pulled back up. That moment of impact. Ouch hehe

I used one at PT, they said it was fine, but not on an incline.

Thank you for all of your replies. I did contact my surgeons office and they said that they actually encourage walking and the use of a treadmill even with a slight incline.

I have a friend who works for a hip surgeon and she was the one who told me that their office doesn't recommend treadmills for their patients.

But my doc gave me the go ahead so off to buy a treadmill!
