Treating Diverticulitis Flare without Antibiotics
Posted , 7 users are following.
I'm interested as to whether any of you has been able to successfully handle flares simply by dietary changes (liquid diet, followed by soft, then slowly working back to normal). The usual antibiotic regimen (at least here in the states) of Flagyl and Cipro make me so ill that I'd rather have the diverticulitis symptoms. Seriously, I felt like I wanted to die last time I tried this and wound up not completing the courses.
Two questions, in particular:
- How long did it take for the symptoms to completely disappear?
- How slowly did you work back into your normal diet; that is, how many weeks (months) was it till you were eating as you were before the flare.
Thanks!

That would be nice although I'm in the UK.
Fluoroquinolones are my specialist topic but I've learnt a lot along the way.
When I read 'nurse' and 'colitis' I think stress.

She has been retired for 4 years but is super Type-A, so stress is always a possibility. She has something called microscopic coliltis, and most docs are clueless about it.

What about alcoholic beverages? I had a beer last night for the first time since the flare and haven't yet paid for it. What do y'all think?

l dont know about alcohol and diverticular disease as l dont drink at all l have liver disease. im not a lush mine is caused by my immune system attacking my liver. l can only say that a few people l know that have diverticular disease can no longer drink beer as it goes straight through them but everyone is different.

Beer contains alcohol and this has to be dealt with (as a toxin) by the liver. If your liver is compromised for any reason the 'payback' will register as something (headache, nausea or full blown hangover depending on how much beer and how much the liver is compromised). Water is the only thing (unless someone knows better) that 'just goes straight through you'.
