Treatment for sinus drip and persistant cough

Usually following a cold I end up with a cough that lingers for several months.  Over twenty years ago when I lived in Florida I visited a D.O and he said I had a deviated septum that caused a drip and irritation of my throat.  I had this coughfor quite a while before visiting him.  He put something on a Q Tip (much longer than those for ear use) and before I knew what he was about to do, shoved that Q Tip into my nose as far as it would reach.  He repeated this in the other nostril.  Before I reached my car following my visit, my cough was cured.  Sometime following this I moved to Colorado.  I have since had this problem and it always occurs following a cold or flu.  I have asked several doctors what this D.O. in Florida might have done or put on the Q Tip that alleviated my dreadful and annoying cough.  They were all at a loss as to what he did.  Would anyone have any idea what this D.O. might have done or used?  I would love to be able to tell my doctor what needs to be done because all I'm getting now is, "try this or try that."  Perhaps what is important is what he might have used rather than the method.
