Treatment info for Blepharitis

Posted , 121 users are following.

Has anyone found treatment info specifically for Blepharitis? I'm told the same old things like "scrub with baby shampoo" and I'm not getting any better.

I'm frustrated and hope that some doctor somewhere has studied this terrible condition - and just want to find the answers!

Thank you,

Oliver, London

    You could try N-acetylcysteine supplements?

I have never registered in a forum of any kind

before but have had blepharitis for years. I was taking this supplement in addition to Milk thistle complex drops for 5 day liver detox (non fasting) and was surprised when the chronic blepharitis cleared up. l googled NAC - n-acetylcysteine only to find it is

a known treatment for blepharitis. l haven't tried NAC eye drops, l now don't need to and l read somewhere that they turn your eyes red and stings!

But l was just so grateful to have chanced upon a treatment that worked for me that it seems selfish nit to let others know. NAC supplements may not be for everyone and as always check with your doctor especially if on any other meds. Good luck

In Jan this year, I started getting continued eye infections and waking up as if my eyes were glued together.

I bought eye drops, didn't work. Went to the docs and got antibiotic eye gel, worked for a week, then as soon as I stopped using it, a week later, same old thing: an eye infection.

I went again, to a nurse practitioner who said it could be blepharitis and to clean my eyelashes in baby shampoo. Still, it didn't work.

So I turned to google. I came upon a forum where people were singing the praises of the red packaged Wet Ones from the USA.

So, I started an extensive regime: I threw out all my make up, make up remover which was oil based, and moisturisers.

I bought Blephasol lotion, neutrogena Pink grapefruit facial wash ( on the same forum they mentioned to use this as it has the same chemical antibacterial ingredient as the wet ones: benzethonium chloride 0.3% in the wet ones).

I use Hyco San ( preservative free) eye drops ESP in the morning to alleviate the dry eyes. At night I use the Eye Soothe eye mask ( bought this and the red packaged wet ones from Amazon: both reviews on these products mention the usefulness for blepharitis sufferers). After using the eye mask, I use the wet ones to clean any infection that have been sweated out by the heated eye mask.

I use disposable mascara wands ( about 200 for £3 from eBay), and I bought loads of new eyeshadow brushes from eBay and wash them after each use with antibacterial hand wash ( bought 8 new brushes £3.90 from eBay) and wash them each week in one go. Saves me money buying disposable make up applicators.

With the wet ones, I cut a small strip to wrap aroundthe tips of my forefinger and gently clean my eyelashes ( not my eye although it doesn't hurt when I accidently wipe my eye) morning and each night (after using the eye mask ) to save money.

After a few days, I started noticing a huge difference. A month later, my eyes are not as glued together in the morning, or as bloodshot and just feel less hit, itchy and yukky.

It seems to be more my left eye than my right but it is improving massively and I'm not stressed anymore about it.

      Hi Arnold,

I can't say whether it's the Blephasol or the wet wipes as I've used them both, along with the eye drops every morning and evening.

But, I don't have red sore eyes anymore, no yellow gunk or 'sleep ' glueing my eyes together in the morning.

I'm even back to wearing daily contact lenses at the weekends too.

I could test them by stopping the Blephasol or wet wipes but don't want to risk it.

      Hope this helps.

It's been about 1 month since I started my regime and the only thing I suffer from is dry eyes in the morning now.

I too use blephasol , wet wipes and my eye drops morning and night. It keep red eyes at bay but I feel that it can easily come back, if I do not keep up the routine

I feel the same. In a months time, I think I might try reducing the use of Blephasol and just use the drops and the wipes.

I'm mainly using Blephasol as eye make up remover, so I might switch to Simple products and see what happens.

    Hi Oliver,

I know your thread is old now but I wanted to post for anyone else looking for help with blepharitis. After 7 months of using antibiotics and saline drops prescribed by my opthamologist, I still had the condition. I used benzethonium chloride in the form of wet ones and my blepharitis cleared up within 2 weeks. It was amazing. I still use them now and again. I've read that it doesn't work with all forms of blepharitis, but I'd definitely recommend Trying it rather than antibiotics.

    Cheers

I have posterior blepharitis.  I have been using Wet Wipes for last 1 week.  I did notice less irritation on my eyes, but the change is so small it's hard to actually notice it.

Do you think Wet Wipes work on posterior blepharitis?

I was on an a steroid drops so when I went to the specialist they didn't see any infection but I had another doctor diagnose me with blepharitis. The benzethonium chloride .03% works there is a generic at rite aid with benzethonium chloride .0125 it's not as strong but maybe once it's controlled maybe switch to the generic? Have to say without reading this thread my quality of life was pointless I walked around with my eyes closed bumping into things when I would go out the light caused more sensitivity I actually had a waitress I know asked me if I had hang over! I tried explaining but it was pointless.
