Treatment info for Blepharitis

Posted , 121 users are following.

Has anyone found treatment info specifically for Blepharitis? I'm told the same old things like "scrub with baby shampoo" and I'm not getting any better.

I'm frustrated and hope that some doctor somewhere has studied this terrible condition - and just want to find the answers!

Thank you,

Oliver, London

I am definitely going to try the Wet Ones. I can't get rid of this and it's very annoying. I have enjoyed and learned from everyone's input. Thank you all and good luck!!!

      Hi Marilyn,

Welcome aboard !  How long have you experienced this ? How does it affect you ?

      Hi Marilyn

What have you got to lose.....that eventually was my attitudewink

It's worked well but they are starting to water a little bit again....not the streaming tears I had before and no inflammation but I've jumped on them again....Started the wet one more regularly now...I still used them but not as regularly as at first.

      Love

Has anyone found anything that works for the itching? I find that that is my worst symptom, my eyes are always itchy. I have been doing the hot compresses and massage/ using wet ones for a week and I'm finding that they are still blocked. I'm wondering whether to go back to the doctors and try and get some antibiotics, doxy something?

      Dear Elinor,

I used the wipes in the US with Benzethonium Chloride in them.

It took me a week and a half of using the wipes before I got some relief and could go down to 3 times a day. I had that horrrible itching too. Drove me crazy for 6 months.

After I killed it, I found that it was caused by a staphylococcus infection. The wipes do kill that if you are not allergic to them.

It took 3 months plus the week and a half to do it. Once or twice I had an itch and I jumped on it for just 2 days and then it was gone.

      Hope this info helps  you.

This is reassuring, thank you. Did you use the wipes on the inner eyelid or underneath it? (Where eyeliner would go?) I'm a bit uncertain as to where I should use the wipes!

      Dear Elinor,

I used them on the lashes and the lid margins. The upper ones I pushes up on the lashes with the wipes (1 of 8 sections wrapped around the fingertip) rather like mascara. Then I wiped the lower ones (from one side to the other). I then closed my eyes and did the top lashes side to side too.

I used all 8 sections of the wipe. Two times on each eye area (side to side) using clean section of wipe each time. When I felt better I then went down to 3 times a day.

Some people have gone down sooner and some have killed it doing it 2 times a day (probably because they worked) and still had good results. I am only saying how I did it.

The eyelashes go deep so it takes a while and the amount of Benzethonium Chloride is not enough to kill it at a one time use.

Being constant was the cure. I did not stop once it felt better. I went for the kill. Took 31/2 months and gone.

      Hope this helps.

      Dear Elinor,

I have been thinking about this for days. When I had that itching I rubbed my finger in a back and forth method (like you were itching the lashes) as I went across the lash line. The BlephEx machine cleans like that but rotates. I was told, though, it is used only for mites.

It has been quite a while that the Blepharitis has been gone. Sorry it took me so long to think of this.

Hope this info helps you too.

Lynda-I know this may sound crazy, but how can one tell if they are allergic to the Wet Ones ? My lids, the upper part, where eye shadow is applied is sore to the touch.  I don't know whether this is from swelling or maybe I have burned my lids with the compresses.  Any thoughts ?!

      Dear Kathy,

Sorry, I have been away for a couple of days babysitting.

Are you using the wipes in the US?

If so, they can be harsh if used on the skin. I used them only on the eyelash area. If you use too big a piece of the wipe it gets all over.

I tore each one into 8 sections. It left only an area big enough to go around the fingertip.

You should not be doing the area where the eyeshadow goes. The most would be a tad above the eyelashes like eyeliner perhaps.

I use the wipes on someone in the rest home and only 2 times a week.

Because she is old, I use water on a tissue or cotton ball and wipe her skin afterwards. You could do the same.

The Quats can take up to 10 minutes to kill so why not wipe with water after 10 minutes or if still you right away.

The wipes in the UK may be stronger. I just don't know. The off brands have less of the Benzethonium Chloride in them too (Floridagal pointed that out).

Try wiping with the water on the skin area and see if that helps.

Let me know how you are doing.

Sorry, this is happening to you.

I use a hot wash cloth (microwave) and use it pretty hot and don't have a problem.

Check the wipes on your skin hand or arm and see if you are allergic.

Are you using the heat before you do the wipes? That could open up your pores and cause problems too. Just a thought.

      Hope this helps,

      Hi Lynda,

I certainly understand. I usually apply the hot wet compresses before the Wet Ones so they will not remove the Wet Ones ingredient. My skin is extra sensitive. I have been using Cetaphyll soap for my face and eyelids and it seems to be soothing It seems much better than the Baby Shampoo I had tried. I have ordered a Thermalon Eye Mask .  I will let you know how it works. Thanks so much as always, you've been a great help.

      Dear Kathy,

Wet Ones need to only be on the eyes for 10 minutes to do their job.

Google quats. That is how I found that out.

Try and use heat at a different time slot. Waiting a while after using the wipes could make all the difference or wiping with water after could help too.

Thinking of you and hope you get relief soon too.

I think I have been doing it all wrong. I thought I was just suppose to wipe the lash lines with the strip of wet ones. So, you apply the entire wet one to the entire lid , for 10 min ?? I can't really see, but I can feel a hard crust on the upper lids close to the lash line.  I think I applied the washcloth toooo hot and that may have burned them Thanks for your continued support.

      Dear Kathy,

No, sorry to mix you up. Do tear into 8 strips. I was just saying that you could wipe after 10 minutes with water. It takes about 10 minutes to kill is what I read online when looking up Quats and how they work.  I did not rinse my eyes after using but I do rinse with water after using the wipes on that person in a rest home as gets on her skin. I use water and a tissue.

Hope this helps and sorry for the confusion.

      Dear Lynda79

I can not thank you enough for putting this information up on this site.   I have had this going on for about 6 months now.   Went to a couple different doctors who all just gave me eye drops and antibiotic ointment and said I had dry eye.  One said 'severe dry eye' but no reason why or any idea how to treat it.   I started looking on line for any information and came across the usual treatments for blepharitis.  I bought the baby shampoo,  the eyelid scrub,  using a wash cloth to warm my eyelids and use massage, etc.   It got slightly better in my left eye but my right eye got worse!   It was tearing all the time.  I couldn't do anything,  couldn't wear makeup and the skin under my eye was raw from constant wiping of the tears.   I kept looking for any other option and found this forum with your post.   I thought it couldn't be that easy.  Just use some Wet Ones?  Well I bought them and used them.  I am on my 5th day.  The swelling and redness on my eyelids was 75% gone after 2 days.   Today is my 5th day and my right eye is not tearing much at all.  Very slightly.   They aren't stinging or burning or itching.  I even forget about them!  I am going to continue to use the Wet Ones.

I think my problem with blepharitis started because of a couple things.  I switched from using ProActiv to wash my face.  I used it all over my face including to remove my eye makeup.   I think it kept any bacteria under control and it also removed all eye makeup.    I stitched to a more mild cleanser and it wasn't removing all of my makeup.  I would get up in the morning and have eye liner pencil showing when it looked like it had all come off with the milder cleanser the night before.  I think this excess makeup allowed staph to grow.  I have not gone back to the ProActiv but I have continued to use the eyelid wash and I am going to continue to use the Wet Ones every day.   It's made a huge difference even after  just 5 days.

Thank you so much for putting this information up.   I never would have connected this to a staph infection on my own.  I will continue to use the Wet Ones.  THANK YOU AGAIN
