trigeminal neuralgia

My wife had a brain haemorrage in July 07 resulting in loss of use in her left arm and leg and a weakness in her swallowing. However she is alive and that is the most important thing. Some time after she was discharged from hospital she started to develope pains in the right side of her face, specifically to her mouth, nose and eye areas. Some six months ago those pains developed into striking pains which were very very painful, her neuro-surgeon diagnosed Trigeminal Neuralgia and she started on a course of medication, initially Carbamazepine but when this didn`t help she was prescribed Tramadol and Amptrytiline. The pain whilst not constant, was still very painful when it did occur.

We then decided to try Acupuncture(my wife had good results some years ago for a painful shoulder)-our GP recommended a local Doctor who specialises in acupuncture and my wife embarked on a course lasting six sessions.

Now to the main reason for my writing to this forum and that is to share our experience, after the first session which lasted about 30 minutes, relief was immediate for about 24 hours then it returned, after each session the relief time extended. My wife has just one session to go and she has permanent relief, just experiencing a dull tenderness.Wonderful relief. The acupuncture Doctor has also mentioned a colleague who specialises in mouth and swallowing problems using acupuncture and we have an appointment in a couple of weeks and can only pray that we get a similar result. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you very much for sharing this. I have also heard about certain herbal remedies such Niargim tablets and Myelin sheath sarcode which are believed to decrease the sensitivity of the nerves. These remedies build a protective sheath around the nerve and also help to calm them. Anybody who is suffering from this terrible and agonizing condition please do a complete research and then finalize which remedy will be the best suitable one for you.

    Hi M,

Sorry to hear about the problems you and your wife have had, but thank you for your forum post.

I checked on the neuraglia section, your post as been useful to read.

My self and daughter both suffer neuraglia face pain and i was thinking about using accuncture treatment.

Although it might not be for all, i am so pleased your wife found some ease to her pains.

Maybe it's worth a try as my daughter as suffered for years.

    Many thanks.

I had neuralgia in the left side of my face on and off for years. I had the epilepsy drugs for a while which did keep it at bay for a couple of years and then it started coming back. Soon after I started having reflexology treatments not for the neuralgia but for migraines. I was surprised and pleased when it also worked for the neuraglia too, I haven't had to use the epilepsy drugs since.
