trigeminal neuralgia, seriously cant cope anymore, tips please

So I'm 24 and since Friday have been in agony, sunday the doctor said it was trigeminal neuralgia, after reading info on it, as I had never heard of it, its left me pretty depressed, I can't face doing any house hold chores, I've literally just lay on sofa, with my scarf wrapped round my head, feel like little red ridding hood! Not good when I have a 4 And 2 year old to look after, is there any tips on getting through this? I'll be honest early hours Sunday when it felt like my face was being stabbed with electric rods, I considerd taking all the tramadol I had, I was prepared to take that risk just to feel no pain, anyway I didn't the thought of the kids stopped me, I'm taking that anti convulseant tablets and so far provides some relive, although I feel rotten for taking them, is there any tips for getting through this? Since Friday its as though its ruled my life, would rather go through labour than this, never ever known a pain like this.

Hi Laura. You may be able to stop or lesson the pain by standing straight up',arms down and serious face still. I usually get attacks when getting into bed, Keep face very still. Never miss a tablet .T N will surely make you pay

Hi Laura I'm sorry you're suffering I know this pain well. I did have the surgery at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles at the age of 46 and did well except for the surgery site for whatever reason I had tenderness and electric  like shooting pain and still do 10 years after the worst thing is surgery does not last forever like I thought TN returned 10 yrs nearly to the date so I am on narcotics and Sonisamide (a seizure medication) that stops the facial pain in its tracks the narcotics help with the pain at the surgery site. The surgery was like a miracle to me.  The rest is just something I have had to live with.

Hi Laura .I may have some way that may help.At least they work for me.When cheek pain cuts in hold your breath as long as you can while keeping a serious face.Take a really big breath. For me this works in 12 secs approx. counting in your head. ALso remove all electrical clocks and phones and radios on bedside tables.Set them up away in a corner nowhere near your head.Hope this helps.

Hi Laura, sorry to hear your suffering I know how you feel. Four years ago I had this condition, My Dr did nothing So I went and had Acupunture from a Actupunturist who studdied Chinese medicin I had four sessions and my condition went away for 12 months then almost to the day it came back, I returned for more treatment and so far Iv'e not had any more problems. It's worth a try anything is better than the pain. Good luck.

I've also heard it works for a short time then just returns as if you never had it done. I believe everyone has very individual symptoms of TN reading these posts on different degrees of treatments, pain and advice. Personally I take the meds when it flares up then drop them to minimal dosage so I am not like zombie and can't do my job. It's a terrible and miserable condition but I am still alive just about.

Omg, I'm so happy to see your post. I'm 24 also and was just diagnosed with TN. The emergency room Dr. acted like I was crazy for thinking I had TN at my age "You're way to young for TN, you just need a root canal." Well I had one plus and extraction including my wisdom tooth and none of it helped my pain. Finally a Maxillofacial surgeon diagnosed me and prescribed me a prescription that has given me my life back. This condition is so unbearable, I would cry every night or after a very long bout of shocks. People would call me a baby or wuss and say I just couldn't take pain, but no one who doesn't have this, has felt pain such as TN.

I also felt suicidal, but I have a one year old who is the love of my life and I couldn't bare to leave her. I too contemplated taking a whole bottle of pills but instead, I prayed and asked God to take the pain away or to atleast have the Dr's find the cause. I'm now managing my TN as best as I can, taking one day at a time and I think we could be a good support system for each other, being the same age.

    Alea

I have had TN for14 years now and been on various tablets I do suggest you join the TN association which has been very helpful to me and it is only £15 a year to join. I find stress does make it flare up and the cold wind in winter. I am currently on gabapentin and trileptal, (oxcarbazepine) over the years I have reduced to a very small dose of gabapentin. It can flare up and then die down. My doctor referred me to the top neurologist in my area who was an expert in TN as generally in a typical doctors surgery they don't come across many cases. It is a condition that can be managed but the more information you have the more in control you will be.

Hey im Bonnie, im 25. I've had a problem for 10 years that doctors are just now saying is unclassic TN. My pain is literally debilitating and breathtaking and absolutely nothing helps. Everything i do causes short lasting spasms of sharp, stabbing and twisting, crippling pain that shoots out of my left ear. It used to be both ears until i was 3 months pregnant with my daughter, the pain completely went away, then came back about 3 months after she was born, worse than ever and only on the left side. The chronic pain lasts about 20 seconds straight then fades to a more dull but still debilitating pain that lasts 3-4 minutes. After the pain stops, it takes a couple minutes to be able to think clearly and see straight again only for all of it to happen all over again... this happens at least 10 times every hour of everyday. I am exhausted because i cant sleep and I'm always grumpy because i cant ever even sit long enough to relax. The past 3 months have been challenging, its gettimg worse. I can feel myself getting slower, my words are slurring my reaction time is a fraction of what it should be. i cant drive, i cant work, and i cant play with my 2 year old daughter. I dont know what to do with myself anymore, i dont like to go out in public because i look crazy when i have to stop right where i am and put my head down to hold my ear. Im truely ready to give up if i cant find relief. i hope that someone out there can relate and help because im out of options and im tired of suffering

Bonnie, maybe I missed it in your message, but are are you on neurontin or tegratol. Now I see your message was over a year ago. I am on the meds but have a hard time functioning on them. Some days all I do is sleeep. Driving and focusing are a problem. I would hate to stay on these meds. I the oral surgeon and neurologist puts me on them. They make my hands jerk also. I have an appt with a Neurosurgeon Monday Jan 9th for an MRI. He specializes in Gamma Knife. Just wondering how you are now ?
