Tripped over some wood a piece of which smashed into my shinbone creating a painful lump.

The lump was about the size of half an egg and the injury was ferociously painful. My wife dressed the wound cleaning it with a weak solution of disinfection. I slept reasonably well that night but the next night the pain came back keeping me awake all night. In the morning it suddenly stopped but there is still a bump about an inch wide and half an inch high and I wonder how long it will take to go.

you may have an infection there. Did any of the wood,a small splinter for example enter the wound? Just keep the wound clean. Soap and water is fine.If you get any redness around that lump, and especially if it spreads up or down your leg then go to ER or A/E. That may mean sepsis. Same advice if it gets very painful.

As to how long it will take to go,that depends on how deep it is,whether you have any foreign body in there, any infection, deeper injury etc etc

The damage does not appear to be a wound as such in that the skin did not break. The lump has diminished a trifle but is still red. To put it mildly I'm terrified of going to any hospital at the moment not because I fear pain if they decide to open the lump up but because to many people are becoming affected by Corona when they enter a hospital.
