Go to another doctor . Please. It sounds respiratory related.

I too have PHN (which is really what you're dealing with, not shingles so you could try posting in that forum also) in my back and chest. As anything seems to be fair game for odd symptoms, I can see why your doctor felt it was related to your previous shingles. But I personally haven't had this. Well, I DID, but it was after a fall and injury to my rib area. That took 4 months to heal. However, you don't mention a new injury.
When you talk to a doctor, be precise. Is it the same type of pain you've had before? It it sharp or always dull? Is it made worse by activity? Have you had this same type of pain every day for 10 years, it's just now getting worse and lasting longer? There could be some other underlying issue going on. I'd assume he'd at least listen to your lungs and order an xray to see if there's a back problem. I'm assuming, correctly, that you too are getting older and maybe it's related to a muscle or tendinitis problem. If it's the same type of pain, just lasting longer, I personally wouldn't expect it to be a serious, new health issue. But if it's different in intensity and location and is affecting your life, definitely follow-up.

Liz,
Some, but not all physicians are excellent at marginalizing patients. They also try to cover up when they don't know what is going on.
When a patient takes a deep breath and has a sharp stabbing pain on inspiration, it is called pleuritic chest pain and the cause needs to be checked out.
It is caused by fluid in the pleural space (linings between your lungs and ribs).
I would suggest seeing a pulmonologist, who would listen carefully for a friction rub, order a chest X-RAY, and CT. Do you have a history of asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, smoking, or pulmonary diseases or being immunocompromised? diseases?
I have had pleuritic pain, and it can be excruciating. Pleurisy can occur with inspiration/expiration, and by lying on the affected side. The quality of pain is a sharp stabbing pain. Shingles pain is electric, lancinating, burning and constant, but can crescendo and decrescendo.
Are you short of breath?
Cardiac pain, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary can all cause pain in that area, and until you are evaluated by someone who cares to listen to you seriously, you will not know the answer.
Please let us know how you do.
Best Wishes
Merry Juliana
