Troubles in heel after ankle fusion.

Still in pain after getting out of my cast from ankle fusion .I was doing good stepped down and got pain in top of heel,up calf and in my foot. I'm still trying to get a diagnosis. ..believe it's the achellies tendon ...frustrated. I know the rode of recovery but sometimes things do happen if there is a weakness. I wish I could get a answer and move on. I'm back non weightbearing to see if it helps and made a makeshift with ace bandage to keep in heel from moving. I was out of my cast a total of 2 days when this happened.

    Hi Crutchy.

I am 8 weeks 1 day post subtalar fusion. I went into the boot at 4 weeks and started weight bearing as I could tolerate at week 6. I am almost at a point where I can use a cane full time.  Like you, the first few times I started weight bearing was very painful. Even after 2 weeks I am still in a fair amount of pain.  But I am progressing.  Our bones, muscles, and joints went a long time without movement or stress. They are still tender. I eased into weight bearing by starting with toe pressure and as my tendons became more flexible and stronger I added more weight with crutches.  I take Tylenol and try to keep going until it just hurts too much. Then I ice and elevate for a half hour and go again. As long as everything is fused correctly, which is the key, our tendons and muscles will hurt until they are stronger, but won’t get stronger until you use them.

I hope it all works out for you.
