TRUS biopsy happening sooner than expected

My partner was being put on his consultants NHS list to have a biopsy carried out in early march, to confirm that the MRI scan was correct in saying all was clear. He got a letter today, however, giving him a date 2 weeks from now. It's probably because someone cancelled but he thinks it's because the consultant thinks something is seriously wrong with him! Anyway, I just wanted to check if this biopsy is a good idea while he is feeling pain from the prostate? He is getting it every day, like a dull throbbing. I think that taking random biopsies from an already enlarged, painful prostate is asking for trouble. I have told him we should contact the urologist on Monday and make sure he is aware of the symptoms. I am so worried that he will either end up with an infection or urinary retention, or both. Has anyone had an ok experience with TRUS biopsy, I mean without a lot of pain during procedure and no real side effects afterwards?

NB some people write that TRUS biopsies are painful. I didn't have that sort  A friend had two at Epsom hospital, as first found nothing but PSA remained high so he had another.  One was painless, one hurt a bit, but not too bad.  Done by same man, both random sort, so no logic as to why one hurt (on most of its needles) a bit, and one he hardly felt.  I suppose the anaesthetic worked better one time, than another.  Neither was preceded by an MRI.  My uncle says his TRUS biopsy hurt, but not too bad and he wouldn't blink at having it again.

Thank you for that Paul, I hope his is as painless as it can be. I suppose it depends on the skill of the person doing it as well and how much experience he or she has. I think risk of infection is more worrying so hope to goodness he doesn't end up with one.

I always read up on what others say about pain, and get quite worried !  I did have mild penis pain when first attempting sex (abandoned !) 9 days after transperineal prostate biopsy, but 2 days later it was perfectly OK.  The biopsy causes mild internal swelling.  I was glad to be able to pee fine after it, and to be allowed to leave fast after waking up from the anaesthetic (after being given a small meal).   Cystoscopy : I read and re-read accounts of pee-pain : it was nothing much, and it’s all front-loaded, keep peeing and the pain stops.  Post-holep pee pain : I read and re-read accounts of pee-pain, must have annoyed my uro the number of times I asked about it, but it wasn’t too bad really.  Tiresome for sure, but not worth the worry I’d spent on it.

I get the impression that transperineal prostate biopsy is not an option on NHS.   If I hadn’t had private insurance, I don’t know if I’d have paid the extra for it … probably not, tbh.  I think the hospital fee (day case) was £1300 and the uro’s fee was £300 and anaesthetist maybe £250 more.  Anaesthetists sound like they are really well paid to me – nice string of patients at £250 a pop, as little as 30 minutes to mind each one (and once you’re “out” some of them have a junior assistant to watch your vital signs, whilst they move on to the next patient!).  TRUS biopsy = you’re awake.
