Everyone is a bit scared, some are very scared, it's notrmal to be apprehensive about a major operation like this.   Mine didn't exactly go to plan, but I would not trade places with the hip joint I had this time last year.

Being free of that OA pain is liberating, I can walk to the bus or station to go to work, cycle to town, in fact do almost anything that I used to do before the OA pain set in.

    Best wishes

Please don't get het up about the warnings you've had from the hospital. They are obliged to warn you about all the possible complications. Most of them are very rare but the hospital could be sued for negligence if they hadn't told you.

Don't worry. I'm sure everything will be fine.

    Hi Joan:

It is pretty normal to have anxiety over your upcoming surgery. It is a major surgery, but normally things go pretty well. I am 62 and had both of my hips replaced this year the right in May and the left in August. I am a big chicken and hate being operated on, but I have to say it wasn't my worst surgery. The recovery is slow, much slower than most of us realized but once you are healed as in my case, "oh what a difference". I hope this helps. Do you have your surgery date yet? Wishing you well....Barb

I'm in the same boat.  I'm waiting for my call.  Every day I chicken out but by evening I'm in so much pain I know I have to do this.  Everyone wants to tell me about a horror story they heard!!! Ugg, I'm such a chicken, I know I cannot go on like this.  It is very encouraging to hear such positive things from people here.  A good thing.

      Joan & Cookie,

When it's all over, and you are on the road to recovery, you'll wonder what all the worry was about .... we're all nervous before a big operation, it's totally natural.

As you say, ignore the problem stories - that's just people trying to get help and reassurance about their particular problem.  You rarely hear of the total success stories, those people don't need this forum lol.

      Best wishes to you both

I am awaiting my surgery date (hopefully will get it on 10/19 when I go to surgeon), but am feeling both excited to have it done but scared to death of the surgery.  I keep reminding myself that although there may be a few weeks of pain and dependence on others, I will feel so much better after.  I am taking my family to Disney World Nov/2017 for my son's graduation present and being able to walk around there much easier is my inspiration.  This is what keeps me going.  I'm going to hang a picture of Disney on my wall to look at when I am feeling frustrated.  I'm hoping this will keep me in the right mindset!  Good luck to you with your surgery!

I wasn't really allowed to be nervous before my two hip surgery since I'm a former ArmyAirborne Ranger, this is a military service connected issue, and it was being done at a veterans hospital. I had to maintain a brave face and pretend it was no big deal. Different experiences for all of us.
