Trying to come off sertraline 25 mg after 8 weeks.

I did not want to take this but after two stress filled months, I did. So started with 25 mg and did not want to increase. So many sleepless nights and some headaches made me decrease the dosage the last 2 weeks. I have had rapid heart beat and today feel heavy in my head and dry mouth. Don't know how to proceed. I have never taken drugs before like this and I hate it. I haven't told doctor that I decreased yet. Should I go back up to 25 mg? Do you think I would have many effects at that low dosage? Confused and scared. I would appreciate any comments from similar experiences!

    Hi Carole

You need to speak to your doctor.  Rather than come off this it may be that you need to increase.  25mg is very low, most people seem to start on 50mg which is considered to be a maintenance dosage, and then increase gradually in order to appreciate the benefits of this drug.

It may be that you are stressed about coming off this drug and as you're only taking 25mg it sounds like the symptoms you're having are normal anxiety symptoms?

I am not a doctor, just going by the explanations my doctor has given me regarding Sertraline.

Keep us posted and good luck.

Hi Carole, I really know how you feel.

My doctor at to give me Diaspam to help me sleep other wise I couldn’t take Sertraline with ou it at the moment.

It’s my 10th day of taking Sertraline and I still anxious, frightened, also very depressed. Going to give it another week or two.

People on the forum have told me it gets better can’t wait.

Don’t give up yet, i’m With you and know how you feel.

It's a waiting game. Side effects can be shocking. I went to hell and back but am now up to 150mg and feel so very.much better. Every increase sees side effects

Drink plenty of water and try to eat good stuff. You will come through this. Don't mess with your dosage. Try to take same time every day and good luck.

I'm just into my second week on 50mg. It's a case of good day bad day. I have been quite anxious and had negative thoughts today yet yesterday I felt really good. Hopefully another few weeks and it should start to take real effect. I am taking because of my IBS which has improved a little.

Really sorry to hear about your issues with Sertraline. Like you I had never taken meds. I was put on 150mg last Sept and I am now off the drug since 19 days ago. I am suffer horrendous withdrawal symptoms. I also developed tinnitus on this drug.  My sleep has been affected since coming off it and I just want to feel normal again. Why not visit you GP and ask to taper off the drug?  This way you will avoid the side effects and withdrawal symptoms. I am sure there is another way🙏

I had a lot of start up side effects on 25mg. They all settled. It may take 8 weeks to settle. Some people say 12 weeks.
