Trying to decide on a new wheelchair accessible vehicle

Hi,

My husband has advanced muscular dystrophy and uses a motorized wheelchair.  Our minivan is getting old and we are thinking of replacing it.  Has anyone had any experience with the Kia Soul conversion or any of the other alternatives to a minvan?  If so, were you using a motorized chair or a manual chair?  He would be a passenger.

    HI Kathleen,

Does your husband receive DLA Mobility Rate or the PIP Enhanced Rate of Mobility Allowance?

I'm in a wheelchair, but I can transfer with help to our car, the lease with Motability ends on Christmas Eve 2016. We have decided to get the same car and model again, because its very spacious.

If you need help with any alterations to Motability vehicles, these can be done under a grant from Motability Finance may do for you.

BTW, we have a Mitsibushi ASX3, it's slighty wider than the ASX2, all doors open to nearly 90 degrees which isn't too bad to transfer to a wheelchair. I find it good, but my son helps me and my wife.

    Regards,

    Les.

      Hi Les,

      Thank you for your reply.

My husband can't transfer to a seat in a car.  Also I'm not sure what  by DLA Mobility Rate or  the PIP Enhanced Rate of Mobility Allowance means.  I assume these are government programs in the UK.  We live in the United States.

      Sincerely,

      Kathleen
