Trying to decide when is the right time for total hip replacement. My hip is fractured at the ball.

Doctor said to let him know when the pain is unbearable and schedule surgery. Is sooner better or should I wait?? Fracture has not gone all the way through the bone yet but I can feel that it is getting worse daily. My job requires a lot of walking. Just want to know if anyone has experience with having a fracture get worse with daily activities.

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum,

I've not experienced your problem, mine was normal wear and tear, but I would say your recovery will be faster and easier while you still have good muscles in your leg.  So if your pain is under control and you are still able to carry on with more or less your daily activities it might be better to hang on a bit.

When you feel that your ability to walk is impaired and you start to lose that muscle strength I would start thinking of taking the plunge.

    Hope this helps a little,

    Cels x

      Thank you CelsB,

Some good advice. Better to decide on my terms and use my health as a guide on taking the plunge.

      Thanks,

      Mike

I have no experience of fracture, but generally, sooner is better than later.  People seem to heal betterand faster if they are in a better shape before the operation.

A chap who had his operation the same day as me, was still trying to walk with a walker when I was discharged and walking out of the hospital with two sticks. He was in a much worse state before the operation, and was certainly much slower to recover.

Personally, I wouldn't leave it too long.

Thanks Graham for the insight. It is probably better to schedule a surgery when I am in good shape vs having the hip totally fracture and have to wait for a open surgery spot.

Hi Mike and welcome to here :-)

A couple of things spring to mind:

    1) As Cels said, the earlier you have the surgery, the quicker you are likely to heal as your body still has base strength;

    2) The earlier you have the surgery, the less likely you are to develop bad habits - I was llimping heavily by the time I came to have mine. And also, I was having to compensate (big time) when I went up stairs.

    3) On the other hand, if you work out doors (such as a posties) you may want to wait until the winter and miss the weather.

    Hope that helps

The season that you have your recovery can make a big difference to how much you can get out and walk, but also consider wearing TED stockings in the summer .... must be awful.  At least I had both my six-week TED wearing sessions in the winter, great for keeping the legs warm. confused

I would wait till its unbearable. I was having my thr consults at 17 but now im 20 the pain in so unbearable iv given in and had to agree to the thr. The longer you wait the longer you will have to wait for a revision.

Have you had your surgery yet? And what is the reason for your thr? I am trying to hold out a little bit. But I think based on comments quality of life is a big thing to consider. And doing it while I have decent health is a big one too.

      Thanks Sarah

      Hope your thr goes well

My thr is in 3 weeks but it will be my 12th. I know the quality of life atm us not great. Im not even allowed to work so my life is pretty miserable but the main issue is because im getting it done so young getting it redone will be more problematic for me. But then again the the process takes so long it may be best to start trying to get it sorted now x

Sarah, are you having a 12th THR?  That boggles my mind.  Would you be willing to say why you are having so many?  I have had a few and might have to have another, but I am unsure if it is a good idea.

I would really like to talk to you.

      Thanks

Haha no not my 12th thr but my 12th operation on my hips and knees haha. Iv had so many in the space of 13 years due to the severity of my congetnital hip dysplasia.

My thr will be my first but because i technically do not have a hip the have to actually make a whole new hip socket and physically move my hips 5cm down and so on before giving me the fake hip haha. The problem with my surgery being so difficult is that by the time i need a new one i may nkt actually be able to have one 😂 x

Glad to hear you haven't had 12 hip replacements! hehehe  .I had 4 surgeries in my teens ending with a fused hip at 16. Then in 2008 I had 7 surgeries on my hip trying to have a replacement.  It dislocated 3 times and then got infected.  So now again I don't have a hip which has made life quite a bit difficult.  I am now thinking about getting it done again as the bone has cracked.  I'm terrified that if I fall down it will completely break.  Oh well,  the joys of life.  Good luck to you.

Wow. That makes us rather similar. Having no hip really is fun isnt it 😂

Whatever you do, do not fall! That could complete the fracture at a most inconvient place and time with excrusiating pain.
