Trying to get my sex life back AND control BPH

New here, and it looks like there is a lot of experience in prostate issues.

I have BPH;  I also have ED, for which Levitra is a very satisfactory solution.  I respond well to it and side effects are minimal for me.

I was first prescribed Doxazosin for the BPH, however that caused too much dizziness and swelling in my feet.  I did not stay on it for long and asked for another alpha blocker.

Tried Finasteride for a couple of months.  While it did relieve my nighttime urination difficulties and there was only a little dizziness, my libido took a serious crash dive.  I asked my doctor for another solution to the BPH.

Went on Tamsulosin and am still taking it.  Urination became less a problem and my libido did return, but the quality of sex is now very much diminished.  My semen production decreased sharply.  Before too long, ejaculations became completely dry.  Along with that, my orgasms, which used to be very strong and pleasurable have become real weak - almost non-events.  I'm thinking there has to be a better way.

I've done some research and have found several reliable studies indicating that Alfuzosin HCL causes less dry ejaculation and retrograde ejaculation, loss of libido, and sexual problems in a statistically significant number of men than other alpha blockers.

Before I make yet another switch, I'd like to ask you all here if you've had any positive experience with Alfuzosin and of course if you have any suggestions of what I might pursue next.  I've read dave49024's post, btw.  Sounds like we're in similar places.

You could look into Terazosin (Hytrin). I was taking Flomax and then Rapaflo, but didn't like them. Terazosin doesn't give me the negative side effects those did like retrograde ejaculation and low libido. It is an alpha blocker, but may not work as well as the others. But might be worth a try.

Thanks, motorman.  Will definitely check it out.

Anyone else here try Terazosin and not experience sexual side effects?

Dump the Flomax...it does what you say, dry come sometimes...wet and small other times.  Just know it does help reduce BP so if hypertension is a problem be sure to replace it with something else.  Do your Kegels too.

I had Urolift surgery 9 months ago and the immediate result was being able to pee and come like a teenager again....well sort of...pee for sure.  Now, when self-pleasuring, ejaculate a load and it shoots 6-8 inches up my belly.  Can't measure that with a lady but guess its the same intensity.  I don't use the ED drugs....so add them and its gravy. I'm 71yo

      "Dump the Flomax..."

I'm tryin', I'm tryin'.  Hypertension isn't an issue.  It would be good to ejaculate to _any_ degree again, and feel it.  smile. I'm in my 70s, too.

Thanks for your Urolift comments.  It may come to that.  For now I'm trying to find non-invasive answers.

As for pills, I read today that the US NIH reports that of the a-blockers, Alfuzosin has the lowest reported incidence of sexual side effects.

Kinau, forget the drugs for BPH. Read up on the Urolift. Have your Uro determine the type and size of your prostate and see if you qualify.

      Hi, John;

I've read up on Urolift and have some concerns that make me think the jury might still be out on this clever and relatively non-invasive procedure.  Even some of the advocates of it here in our forum point out that there are caveats to consider.

Urolift is very new on the market and so new to my state that I couldn't Google a single practitioner using it although there must be some.  I would want anyone performing this on me to have considerable experience with it.

If, or example, down the road the prostate grows larger after Urolift, real surgery is required to remove both the Urolift hardware and the prostate tissue that then surrounds it.

I feel that my own BPH isn't so desperate that I want to accept the cost and the recovery time from Urolift when it may well be possible to get off Tamsulosin and switch to a sexually friendlier drug like Alfusosin or the Terazosin that Motoman suggested.

      K.

    Reporting back:

I switched from Tamsulosin to Alfuzosin about ten days ago.

BPH symptoms are as well controlled as when on Tamsulosin, which was pretty effective so far as urination, etc went.  The happy difference is that normal ejaculation returned and orgasms are back to their previous intensity.

Still dealing with the insurance company on adding daily low dose Levitra to the Alfuzosin.  Will let you all know how far I get with that.
