I agree. See about getting some ativan to help through the next couple weeks. Don't stop the sertraline, it will start helping. I had all the horrid side effects too, and they went away around day 12. I am now 3 weeks in, and I feel so much better.

I agree with the two replies above. You've been through such a lot of stress. Talk to your doc again. You could ask for PROPRANALOL.....it's not addictive at all. Do find out about counselling/talking therapies. I used to think it was a lot of rubbish but if you get a counsellor you get on well with, it will be good for you.

So sorry for your loss.
I went through the same thing after my mom passed away. I spent 24/7 with her, so once she wasn't here any more, I found myself stuck with images that weren't good. I'd also wake up gasping for air, and heart racing all due to what was seen as I slept. I'm not on sertaline anymore, but was considering it again because my life stopped when my mom died. As of May, she's been gone a year, but not much has gotten better with me, except for the gasping for air.
The first time I was on sertaline, I don't remember having any side effects, but I was pretty bad off and probably couldn't tell the difference. After years on them, I thought I was able to deal with anxiety and depression on my own, so I stopped taking the medication. Now that I'm considering going back on the medication, the thought of side effects that people talk about is hindering me from starting. I hope all goes well with you, and that the medication begins to help asap. Take care, and make sure to get plenty of rest, because your body and mind really need it right now.

You'll get there. As the saying goes, "Slow and steady wins the race"
You said that your doctor won't give you any benzos, but maybe he/she will if you explain the side effects. Perhaps something of some sort to get you over this hump.
The other med you're on, is it Amitriptyline? If it is, I'm not sure if that should be mixed with sertaline, because they're both antidepressants, but of a different class. If that's the case, that could explain why you have every side effect in the book.
Either way, I personally think it's best to see a psychiatrist for these matters, rather than a gp. A gp doesn't specialise in mental health, yet they can write scripts, and send you out the door. A psychiatrist has a much better understanding of the various conditions, and which meds would work best. There's absolutely no reason why you should be left to suffer the side effects of heightened anxiety while the med takes time to work. Considering a doctor gets paid for seeing you, he/she technically works for you. If you're not happy with the care you receive, it's time to find a different doctor.
