Tuberosity Fracture (non displaced ) still not healed

Hi all

I had a non-displaced Tuberosity Fracture over 2 months ago with partial tears in the area above it and tendinousis as well as traumatic brusing. I still have no function (do have passive function ) in the arm with pretty severe muscle spasms if I try and raise it .., any one else have this and how did it end up in the end ?

Seems like a long road back seeing my excellent surgeon on Monday for an x ray.

Any thoughts welcome !

Hi there,I really feel for you as I was in a similar place last year. I had a spiral proximal fracture of the humerus accompanied by horrendous swelling and bruising in my arm and hand. For six months I had regular Physio and she slowly slowly increased my ROM. Around Nov. I had hydrodilation of the shoulder which rocketed the improvement in my ROM. I saw the Physio this week and could clap my hands above my head with straight arms and raise arm straight up. I've STILL got stiffness in my fingers and a suspected trapped ulnar nerve and limited back and up movement. So, I've still got some improvement to go but am not discouraged. My consultant suggested I be more patient with myself and be happy with steady improvement. I could have an operation to free the nerve but am prepared to put that on the back burner. To summarise, get the help of a good Physio and work the exercises into your daily routine. An X-ray may help your doctors see the way forward for you. It has been a long 11 months for me but I  have had a lot of support and help on this site - practical ideas from fellow patients. I wish you well.

Hi, you are my kindred spirit! You are the first I've seen post with a tuberosity fracture since I've been on here over the last year. Which tuberosity did you break? I had an avulsion fracture of the lesser tuberosity, which basically means when I fell I dislocated my shoulder backwards, posteriorly, and the force of the tendon rupturing pulled the tuberosity off in a few pieces. I had a torn subscapularis tendon, torn labrum and a displaced comminuted tuberosity fracture, so a lot worse than yours. I can tell you that it took me five months of aggressive painful pt and three hours of stretching at home each day for me to be able to wash my hair with both hands. I couldn't raise my arm up past shoulder height for well over four months. I still have no external rotation at the side after 12 months, even despite that I had a capsular release surgery at 8 months. I see my dr again this week to see what's going on. It is a long road, but keep pushing hard with stretching. I can reach way up behind my back now, and across my body, etc. I have a specific side limitation but everything else is great. See what your dr says after the X-ray. You may need surgery but hopefully not. Your rom is normal for the timeframe though.

fractures usually heal completely in 12 weeks barring any complications...and sooner in young people. Pain may take longer to resolve...especially if tendons were torn. It's good you have good pasive motion. The spasms are most likely protective. I guess you will need to see how the fracture repair has progressed and what the condition of the tendons are to know more of what you can do to rehab the shoulder. With any luck you will not need surgery and progress will start to speed up a bit. Wish you lots of luck!
