I have not had one but it sounds like most guys are reasonably happy with the results.  My question is when you are able: 1. Can you have sex? 2. Do you have retrograde (backwards) ejaculation? 3. How many times during the night are you getting up? 4. If you could do it over would you do it again? 5. If you are able to get an erection can you keep it until orgasm?  Lots of questions that maybe over the next few months can hopefully be answered.    I had a "PAE" on Sept. 10th, 2014 and not overly happy with the results.  Still getting up between 3 and 4 times a night.  I think over time the lack of sleep affects your short term memory.

I have partial retro,  best wait for 6 weeks before sex, I would rather have sex with retro than no sex at all.

think about this ChuckP, how many TURPS are done in a year then think how many negative posts are put on here ( the people who have a Turp and are pleased do not post about it ) I have spoken to nearly 20 people who have had a turp and all are happy.

Howard;  I would just venture a wild guess that most guys don't even know this site exists.  I know I didn't until about 2 months ago.  So truthfully I don't think I agree with you.  Don't want to argue about it- just my humble opinion.  I would also venture that  the majority of guys who had this done would not want to even discuss it with anyone except their Doctors.  Again, just  my humble opinion.

    Hi Junior

I had the traditional TURP 4 months ago, I was in hospital for 5 days instead of the normal 2-3 days. I went to pee at 11 pm and could not ,there was a blockage and I had a blackout falling on my  back on our tiled toilet/bathroom floor(luckily no major damage),I was rushed to local A&E and released after 1 day with a catheter which I had for 1 month. After the catheter was removed there was no blood and I was going to the toilet 3 times a night. I am OK now but still go 2-3 times a night and very tired during the day. Main problem now is RE and lack of orgasm and semen after sex. There are many techniques now apart from the traditional TURP as mentioned there is TURPi which uses electric current and saline solution instead of heatherm and glycin solution. There is Laser TURP. There are probably pros and cons to each. The main advantage of traditional TURP is that a biopsy can be done at the same time to check for prostate cancer and as it is quite rigorous less chance of needing the operation again for many years. On the downside it can be quite blooded and hence more time in hospital, longer recovery and the RE and orgasm problems. There are many papers which can be googled comparing the different techniques. Hope this helps. Regards Peter

Thulium and Holmium laser procedures unlike Green Light PVP do not destroy all the prostate tissue so there is plenty washed out to send to the lab.

Yes I had it 4 years ago and I dreaded the fact that I had it done because I hate the retrograde ejaculation and allthough they told me that the sex and the feeling will be exactly the same after the TURP than before the TURP I cant agree at all. This operation ruined my very happy life and after it is done there is no return.

Yep totally agree the RE and sex problems started with the pills (Finesteride and Tamsulosin) and the TURP operation just made it worst and has definitely effected my marriage. Regards Peter

Hi again junior82967, it seems everybody is different ( in my case erections are no different and when I was on the pills yes there was retro but enjoyable and different ) the plus side of having the turp outwayed the downside ( you get nothing without a price ) the benifit of being able to have sex at all was well worth it, before it was not possible with a foley fitted, your prostate will not get better on it's own ( forget the diet and over the counter pills that will cost you a fortune ) they are a lot of mumbo jumbo, it's down to which op you have, as with further down the line you will have to bite the bullet, I wish you all the best, listen to what your uro say's and take it from there and have a positive attitude.

But is his Uro offering him any alternative procedures. Nor is Junior telling us anything about his symptoms or about the size of his prostate.

      Hi Junior

I like you was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate 2 years ago and for 18 months my GP Doctor prescribed Finesteride and Tamsulosin to reduce the prostate and improve Bladder problem. According to the pills side effects there is a 1 in 10 chance of inabilty to have an erection, decreased sex drive and decreased amount of semen and RE.I was obviously the 1 in the 10. With regards to the traditional TURP operation that I had the NHS factsheet did state side effects after the operation of 75% chance of No Semen produced during orgasm. 14% poor erections, again this are the side effects I am having. Hope you have better luck. Regards. Peter

      How large was your prostate?

When mine was 35 grams in 1995 I was told that I needed a TURP as a matter of some urgency. I refused and  decided to wait for one of the Laser procedures being developed to come along.

That took until 2005 when my prostate was 75grams and I had Green Light PVP with more or less instant recovery and no retro.

By 2013 it had regrown to 125 grams and this time I had Thulium Laser surgery. Recovery from that was slower mainly due to the catherter being left in for two weeks as I had still been passing blood on day two and was discharged with it in. I got an infection when the catheter was in. This time retro but I was half way there from having been on Tamsuloisin.

My flow has slowed down again and I went back to the Uro and already my prostate has grown like a weed and is 50 grams. I have yet to have a cystoscopy to check for a stricture or scar tissue causing the slowdown but I expect it is the prostate again causing obstruction.

It is more than one in ten from people I know. I asked the nurse at our surgery which drug her male patients complain about most. Reply, Tamsulosin, Avodary/Finasteride. She added a lot of wives complain about them as well.

If you don't get retro after your operation many Uro's are now prescribing Avordart after it to stop your prostate from regrowing. My Uro suggested it and and I refused saying at my age (then 78) does my prostate have time to grow back? He looked at my age on the screen and said  probably not but it already is.
