Turp experience and questions

Hi there,

JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)

For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.

Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.

While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.

Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and  was allowed to go home that day at midday.

I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long?  it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)

Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain)  Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?

Thanks for reading,

Henry

Had TURP on 31/08/16 by a surgeon who is reported to have done 15000+ TURP surgeries. My prostate was large 62CC (150 g appx). Could not urinate normally after 4 days so discharged form hospital with catheter ON. Blood is still being passed but on 11/09 passed a huge amount of blood in the night time.

Is this normal? My biopsy results are awaited. What are the experiences of my colleagues in this regard?

This is normal. You will be passing blood and clots of varying sizes for up to two or three weeks, maybe longer, but it will clear. Keep drinking plenty of fluids to help flush the system. You should have or will be getting an appointment to attend the TWOC clinic (Trial Without Catheter) within the next couple of weeks to have the catheter removed.

Thanks a lot, Cat Man! I was worrying if the blood loss could be severe enough to require transfusion. confused

      Hi sandip1952

If you are concerned about the amount of blood loss contact your hospital. If nothing else it will give yo peace of mind.

Thanks Cat Man I contacted my surgeon yesterday. He maintains that it is nothing unusual for a large prostate and may continue for about a week more. Hope it all comes good!

At least you now have some reasurance. It's still early days, and I'm sure in the next few days you will start to see things improve. Keep drinking plenty of fluids, allot more than you normally would.

Out of interest which country are you from.

      OK

Nice speaking with you. I'm from the UK.

I have been through what you are going through. I had my TURP in March. Keep in touch and let me know how things are going.

You said you had TURP done. What kind TURP? What did the doc use to get rid of the prostate  tissue> Laser? If so what type?

Hello, This is Dave. I just had a TURP done 2 weeks ago yesterday.  It was the Button Plasma TURP. Same principal as all the other ones except it is done with a tool that looks like a button. The tool vaporizes the tissue. I wnet in and was out the same day. Catheter for 9 days. Once out, I pee like I'm 21. Not much frequency, about every 2 hours but not bad. A liitle bit of blood once in awhile especially when I'm over active. They took out 50% of only one side of the prostate and around the bladder neck, because mine was real big over 100 g. Dr says it should work and doesn't expect me back for another one.  It takes 6 weeks to heal and 3 months to be back to normal.  There is video on Utube of the proceedure.

Hi Dave Just curious, did you consider HOLEP surgery? If so, why didn't you go  that route?

No I never did. I went to 3 doctors and the Button Plasma was the newest and most inovative one I saw. One urolgist only did the traditional one and the other does the Button Plasma. It is highly recommended by UCIrvine Urology. I did not want to stay in the hospital and this one is out patient.  Bottom line is they all remove the prostate tissue just with different devices. Anyway you look at it, you end up with less prostate. The only one I considered other than the TURP was the UROLIFT but my prostate was too big. The only downside to TURP is the retro ejaculation but the drugs did that anyway.  By the way 1 week after the surgery my Dr had me stop ALL medication (Finesteride and Doxysosin) That is a plus.

In reading these posts I have formed the opinion that it is the DR who you need to worry about. If they are good they can use almost anything and it will be successiful. If they are a flake then you hope they are having a good day when they work on you.

It was conventional TURP with cutter, cauteriser and lotsssss of blood even after 14 days today. catheter ON.

The only reason I didn't go for HoLEP was I was not sure if the surgeon had done enough cases. The TURP-ist had done 16000+. But it was the old messy TURP. Now a days they also do laser TURP I hear.

Hi Cat, just one question, how long did you stay off work after the op.

      Regards,

      Keith
