I'm 59 and having TURP surgery. what should i expect in terms of recovery? Pain? Difficulty urinating? Catheterization? How much time off work (I work from home)? I live alone: do i need someone with me the first day? Week?

Hi Joe, I had 3 TURPs in 2020 and 2021 when I was 57 and 58 years old. Have you had your TURP yet?
It really depends on the size of your prostate and how much tissue they have to remove to open up a path for urine to flow. And, it depends on the skills of the doctor doing the TURP.
If your prostate is normal sized, it should be a matter of leaving the surgery with a Foley cathether in place, connected to a collection bag strapped to your leg. Get some cozy sweats for your recovery. In theory, after a few days, you can remove the Foley and you will being peeing again, healing over time.
Maybe a little blood or scabs or both, but it's not painful. My cousin had a nurse visit daily when he had his surgery. I was sent home with a little bit of documentation and my wife had to learn things like how to clear a plugged Foley, how to empty the bag, etc.

The answer is "it depends." In my case, (3 years ago at age 70), I stayed overnight in the hospital and went home without a catheter. Had the normal urgency and frequency for a few days but only slight burning sensation the first day or two. I resumed all normal activity at 3 weeks per my doctor's instructions. I'm still happy with the outcome.
