TURP scheduled for 8th December and I'm scared.

Hi all,
I'm a 65 year old male (obviously) and I've had several years of problems that apparently require TURP surgery.
I am absolutely terrified of the operation itself and possible side effects.
I don't have the 'normal' symptoms, I have excellent flow and volume 'passing' the bladder pressure test. My problems are to do with urine urgency to the point where I have to squeeze my penis to stop my pee squirting out a bit. I also had a bad run of UTIs 18 months ago, one of which developed into sepsis. I have limited the symptoms a bit by losing a bit of weight. however they are creeping back slowly.
I saw the specialist on the 18th November and he suggested TURP. He also suggested that as my symptoms are 'only' the urgency and night time toilet visits I could delay the surgery if I wanted but my symptoms were likely to worsen gradually. And if I were him he would get it done sooner rather than later.
He then said he had an appointment available for 8th December. This rather freaked me out as I expected him to say something like "I've got an appointment available in May (or some similar later date) giving me a while to come to terms with it. But 8th December gives me only a couple of weeks to get used to the whole idea.
I've always been quite randy and even now we go at it at least once a week so I'm scared of losing that.
And I now it is stupid and my wife has told me so, but I'm scared of her seeing me as somewhat less of a man if I get retrograde ejaculation or some other problem because of this.
I'm not sure why I'm posting this as I'm not asking a question, but hopefully others who have been through this can offer some advice.
I've also been torturing myself and getting worked up by watching You tube videos of the procedure, my wife has banned me from watching any more videos lol.
My Mrs has been very supportive and she really gets the special relationship a guy has with his tackle.
Any help or advice?

No, just the urinary urgency to the point it squirts out, night time urination and occasional urine infections.

Have you considered medications instead of surgery?

Yes I've been on finasteride and tadalafil

I tried tadalafil before and it didn't work for my similar symptoms. I switched to doxazosin which is a real alpha blocker and it helps tremendously.

Always take second opinion, do not depend on one doctor. Each one is having different point of view.

I live on a relatively small island and we only have one specialist in this sort of stuff.
My doctor and the specialist both agree I could delay operation but I'll only be delaying the inevitable and risk getting worse symptoms.

dont get turp, you will not be able to have sex and or it will be no way near as enjoyable
go on tablets instead you can always get turp when youre much older

problem is I've tried the tablets and they aren't working.
other problem is the urine urgency gets so bad I have to squeeze my penis hard to stop peeing myself then that causes an ache to the left of my abdomen, I guess near my left kidney.

Hi, yes had that. Also had scans, ultrasound and a bladder pressure test (urodynamics) which I passed really well. The nurses said I did really well and was able to carry on beyond the point where most others are begging for a wee.
The specialist has said that my prostate is irritating/aggravating my bladder which is the cause of my urgency, infections and nocturia.

even so i wouldnt go for turp, you wont be able to ejaculate forward its pretty much guranteed, and sex will feel empty. you should get second opinion and go for urolift or another less invasive procedure. you can book a private consultation online for around 200quid with any doctor you want, there are websites that make this very easy.

It's odd that your specialist would recommend a TURP, given the symptoms and test results you describe. Understanding that you live on an island, a second opinion is warranted even if it'll take an effort and some cost to get to where there's another urologist. You may save yourself a surgery that is not indicated and cannot be reversed. If surgery is still recommended by the second urologist (one who performs not only TURP but also minimally invasive surgeries) and you do have BPH-related symptoms, there are alternatives to getting a TURP, such as REZUM, Urolift, aquablations, etc. I'm 8 weeks out from having REZUM for my BPH and am glad I picked that treatment option.
Good luck!

I don't want to steer you from the path you are on, but had you considered aquablation as an alternative to TURP? I am having the procedure on 12/7. It is called prostate aquablation. You can google and read up on it as a TURP alternative. Good luck.

I recommend turp .
This is from someone who has had the op .
Get it done sooner rather than later as you may weaken your bladder eventually and that is not good . My personal opinion but I do not recommend medication . The medication can have a negative effects on your mental well being.
Why wait a year or five years . it sounds like your prostate is growing bigger and causing an obstruction in your urethra , hence the squirting.
Imagine a hose pipe when you squeeze the end as water is flowing. Your prostate is squeezing your urethra
My sex life is not the same but it is good and rather this than potential severe bladder problems later.
My very severe symptoms two years after the op have virtually disappeared now and I am happy .

Good luck
