TURP two months ago

I had my TURP operation 8 weeks ago, the bleeding stopped after about 10 days and along with a few scabs. At the moment I find when I go to pass urine, although it comes out fast, there does not seem to be a great amount. Has anyone else come across this.

    Hi Michael

I am 63 years old and had a TURP 6 months ago and  I am the same as you I go to urinate regularly as soon as I feel bladder has urine and it does flow OK and freely poors but not a lot. I certainly regret having the TURP operation as the side effects have effected my life ie Retrograde ejaculation with little semen and brown in colour and erectyl desfunction. Hope things are better for you on that side. Regards Peter

Peter I feel sorry for you and I hope these get somewhat better for you.  After reading some of the post it seems like the doctors only told you guys that the turp was the only procdure.  When he told you this did you look up the side effects of it.  Retrograde ejaculation is a given with turp you may also have dry orgasm.  That will hurt your bladder.  Before my urolift I had 3 kinds of orgasm. Glad I'm off all meds and peeing great  Take care  Ken  Next time please look up anything is being done  Thank you

Have you asked about the brown semen? I had that for about three months after a prostate biopsy and was told that it was old blood that would eventually get out of my system.

I had one done 10 years ago had brownish red semen for a month  ken

      Hi Derek

I haven't asked my GP about the brown semen as it is not painful and I believe it started when I was taking Tamsulosin and Finisteride before the TURP operation. I think it may be to do with the retrograde ejaculation where very little and brown semen comes out of the normal way and the majority of the semen travels back up the bladder and comes out with the urine. The main issue is poor erections due to the operation and the anxiety/stress of trying to have sex with a half erect penis. I am trying to get Viagra to see if that can help me but my GP is not very forthcoming in prescribing it on the NHS, probably because of the cost and their damn budgets.Regards Peter

Viagra is now out of license and he can prescribe very cheap generic versions. Another option is a penis pump. You can buy them on line but the NHS can prescrbe good quality appoved ones for you. Google esshop or soma therapy

I had the TUMT procedure on Jan 21 this year and still have brown semen. That is going on five months post procedure. My Dr. doesn't seem to be concerned but for me I am looking forword to a complete healing. Also have replaced the tamsulosin with Cialis for BPH symptoms and so far find it less bothersome.

When I had brown semen several weeks after a prostate biopsy I was told not to worry was it was 'old blood' It is of concern though as it must have come from somewhere. I ejaculated very soon after my next biopsy and blood came out then but no later old blood.

Hello, Michael.  I had TURP about 10 weeks ago.  Now it doesn't take me very long to empty bladder -- but I don't think I am retaining much. I can pee a bit more if I push it out a little.

I still get up at night -- but only once.  I'm now off all meds.  Like Ken says -- I have dry orgasm -- but sex drive is good.

For those who are trying to evaluate whether or not to have surgery -- mine was an ordeal to go through -- but now I am glad that I did.  I think, though, that there are now procedures that are less harsh on the body than TURP.  I would recommend having a procedure -- but I would recommend thoroughly exploring those other routes (such as Urolift).

Hello Mike.  I'm glad things went well for you.  That surgery is a ordeal and is not right for everyone.  And the men need to start looking thing up information it the key to anything.  I think a lot of doctors thing well if your over 60 sex is not imported to us and if you can have anything thats ok.  I hope the doctors don't take that road with younger men.  They can still have kids but if you have a dry orgasm the doctor would have to take a long needle stick it into your bladder to get urine out and look for the sperm Know thats a ordeal.  Take care and good health  Ken

Hi , i`m with you USA, i live in Portugal but had turp 10 weeks ago in UK, everything went well ( apart from cath removal and the first few urine attempts!!!!!!!!) but released in 24 hours, and 10 weeks on, am now back on bike and 3 x week steady 50 - 70 kms, walking every day with dogs, live up a mountain so hard work, and this week no after effects if trying to hard !!! so all good.  My main gripe is that on discharge the surgeon  said " take it easy for 2/3 weeks no heavy lifting" repeated by charge nurse 1 hour later on discharge!! no other info.... saw my own GP after 10 days, very encouraging>>> " get on with your life !!" but no real info again. So i had the occasional panic!!! but listened to my body and am now relaxing and pleased i had the op, in all other sentiments i totally agree with you !!  best wishes to all out there.

Yes!  I think the only issue is retrograde ejaculation -- which isn't really a problem, as long as I don't get pregnant!

    Michael,

i hope ops that things get better over time for you. I have a friend who had to have Turp done 3 times, but they were trying not to take too much prostate out each time.

for anyone reading these posts that is considering Turp, I would certainly spend some time investigating other less invasive procedures such as HOLep, Urolift or my favorite, PAE. I had the PAE 9 weeks ago and there was no pain, no bleeding, I drove home 8hrs the next day. My results have been nothing short of amazing. I started with a 128g prostate with a large median lobe protruding into the bladder. I had to pee 4-5 times a night and it was always difficult. Eventually I had to be Catherized in the emergency room and then was trained to self cath. I was considering Turp as the other non invasive procedures were not available to me because of prostate size and medium lobe. I then discovered the PAE procedure and it has completely changed my life. I rarely get up at night, pee with no problems during the day and have had no sexual side effects.i am 67.

William I am happy that the PAE worked for you but it don't work for everyone.  That why I keep saying we as men have to research everything we can and get the information and the side effect.  So we have no surprise after.  The urolift worked great for me....Take care  Ken

      Ken,

i agree on researching all. As I mentioned Urolift could not be performed with my conditions. None of the procedures work for everyone. I am glad PAE worked for me and URolift worked for you. Unfortunately many on this Forum have posted nightmares with various procedures including Urolift. Much depends on the patients total problem, health and the skill of the surgeon or radiologist.

We can research until the cows come home but until after we make our 'informed' choice and have the procedure we don't it was the right one for us.

I researched my heart valve replacement and watched operations on Youtube questioned the surgeon on the odds against making it  through surgery and possible problems later and spoke to ones who had the surgery but I did not find out that 30% of patients go into atrial fibrillation after the operation until it happened to me.

I know you have to research it all.  I have a stricture in the urethra just before the prostate just incase I have to have it removed.  This one guy didn't get all the information and woke up with 3 1/2 in off is penis.  He say the doctor never told him about penile shorten.  Keep reseaching that is the key to our health...Ken

Not heard of the penis being shortened before during the procedure. Still they say that size does not matter:-)

Yes I read that in a blog  The guy was 40 years old and the doctor told him that the stricture was only a 1/2 inch.  He had what was call a end to end done They cut the stricture out and they put the clean ends together.  With 3 1/2 in of his urethra cut out. the penis will only grow the lenth of the urethra  He was so depressed that he can't make love to his wife because everytime he tryed it fell out. Yes and the dr still said he saw no problem.  I told my urologist and he said that he would have not done that he said maybe a inch but the patient would have to decide that.  Take care  ken

PAE which is Prostate Artery embolisation.  What is does is cuts off the blood supply to the prostate so it will stop growing.  You will be put out,  Then the skin and the tissues over the artery in the groin will be anaesthetised with a anaesthetic.  Then a needle will be place in the groin and to fine the veins the supply the blood to the prostate. Then they but in this fluid that has these particle in it and that blocks the blood flo.   Please look it up on the internet it will tell you everything and all the risk....One man on here had it done Chuck cost him $10.000 and it did not work..  When a man has a procedure no one will know if it work or not there are many diffrent one  Please check before you have anything done so you know the side effect of them  Take care  Ken

Thanks Kenneth. Nope, that's not for me! Had the TUMT done in January. Not completely satisfied but seems better than some of the results that others have experienced with TURP etc.

Thats only a little of it.  Did you check it out  Me  I had a urolift done 5 weeks ago.  It was the best for me....I also have a stricture at the urethral sphincter muscle.  So the force from the bladder had to go thru the prostate and ten the stricture.  Not much sometime only a little would come out...Not peeing great and I sleep all night and no more meds.  Thank god  Ken

Ken How are you doing? Read you had your Urolift in Florida several years ago. We are in Florida and the doctor wanted to do a bipolar TURP. Sounds awful and Urolift sounds better. My prostate is very large. Was that your problem too? Is it still working? How are the side effects?

Good morning George.  Yes I did have it done in orlando where in florida are you.  Don't know what the CC size was but he told me it was the size of a lemon and was closed.  He could not get the scope through to the bladder.  I have no side effects.  Had it done on a monday and was good to go by sat.  If you want I can give you his number.  I would never have anything done that would cause me more problem.  Its your choice to have any procedure.  My doctor has done many man with large prostate and with median lobes with good results.  Don't know how old you are and if your still into sex but 9 out of 10 surgery for a enlagre prostate will cause sexaul problems and retro ejaculation At 61 Im not giving up anything and I have told my doctor that my orgasm and ejaculation are more intense after I had it done.  I would try a urolift first before anything that may be all you need.  Take care  Ken
