Good Morning Diane, that all depends. Not to add to your fear or stress, I will tell you what happened to me. After a vagional ultrasound, they found that my uterus was so large that it was equal in size of having a 5-6 month pregnancy. We scheduled a hysterecomy and due to the fact I wanted to avoid an abdominal hysterectomy that was the plan in my case, to cut if necessary to remove it vagionally, ( I also had a fybroid) since the recovery time is much easier & less time off work. Thank GOD that my doctor did all he could to remove it whole, because my uterus was full of cancer that went undetected because I no longer had periods, due to an ablation years before. Ask all the right questions! My doctor had no clue I had cancer until he removed my uterus and cut it open and knew even before he sent it to pathology it was cancer. On a positive note, it was confined to the uterus, I am cancer free and had to remove my fallopian tubes and ovaries. No chemo or radiation needed. Please stay as postive as possible and please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you might have. I had 3 surgery's in 3 months and am feeling great! Good Luck with your decision & surgery, and remember my case was very rare. XO Erin

Wow thats exactually my concern because they dont know for sure before surgery if the uterus or fibroids have undetected cancer cells and I'm happy your surgery went great and that you are feeling much better thank u for your info

Had I had the choice, I still would have gone for TAH....because of the unknown content of my 'size of a baby's head' cyst, and multiple fibroids. I am 3 weeks post op, and waiting to hear back from the lab about what they did or (hopefully) didn't find in there. Getting it all out in one piece, for me, was the obvious choice.
