TVT Operations....How many of you have found this successful?

Posted , 62 users are following.

I had a TVT op five years ago, and had no idea of the problems some women had with this, until I read about them on here.

Could the women who have had this operation successfully please stop by and tell us how you are, and how long ago you had your TVT.

Thanks in advance.

No worries, Jean. It means Trans Vaginal Tape....it is inserted to create a sort of sling for the entrance to the bladder, so you don't wee yourself when you sneeze, cough or run.

Hi I'm Anne I had my TVT fitted ten years ago.

i was thrilled at the time as it had cured my stress incontinence after my third child.

shortly after my op I had aches and pains  strange oscillating pains and I felt lethargic  , and I  couldn't sleep this went on for about eighteen months and I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

Ive had many UTI and what I thought was thrush over this ten year period.

I still have fibromyalgia and don't work any more.

Im in a newish relationship and have discovered sex to painful .

The other day I decided to have a look and feel around my nether regions.

Shock horror to feel what felt like barb wire on the neck and wall of my vagina .

I went straight away to GP on antibiotics I'm really sore and now off to see a gynaecologist in the next few weeks.

I feel uncomfortable as I can feel it sticking in me when I sit down and strange pain on my right hand side like a stabbing pain now and then.

I googled the mesh and I'm horrified to read about it and I'm frightened of my outcome.

    wish me luck .

    Anne

i had to give up work as I was too poorly some days to work.

also over the last ten years I've had what I thought was bouts of thrush  mainly treated with over the counter products also UTI s some treated by GP some over the counter products.

Ive had Blood in urine but GP couldn't find out why.

Having met a new partner a year ago it was innevatble

I have not been at all well latley as have been in hospital twice at weekends due to Atrial Fibrilation and at the same time urine retention. The second time there was 1000mls in the bladder that I could not pass so had to have a catheter . I just about got home the day before my appointment at the hospital who are dealing with the mesh problem, and have to give them my answer as to whether I want mesh removal beginning of December. I was told that they would remove the lower part of the mesh first and hope that it would ease the groin pain. If the nerve on the bladder has been damaged it would mean having a catheter. I was told that 70% of patients do have some form of improvement after removal. I said that had I known the harm this mesh TVT could do I would have preferred to wear a nappy and apparently that is what most women have said.

A week after my appointment I went down with a very nasty stomach bug and the worse I have ever had, so my immune system is also knocked out. My muscles and joints are very painful and this was diagnosed in the past as Polymyalgia and all I can say to this is, isn't it time they got their diagnoses correct.

I had tvt op 3 weeks ago. The day after the surgery I read all the horror stories about things thad had gone wrong for what seemed like a significant number of people this scared me senseless and every time I had a twinge of pain I became very anxious that I was going to be one of those statistics. The reality is I'm doing fine.

I did have an infection in my vagina one week after surgery. I suspected something was wrong when I suddenly had a gush of fresh blood and pain. I quickly went to the docs and got anti biotic. Soon cleared up. My next panic was when I developed sciatica at two weeks. I'm managing to resolve this with heat on my back and massage using a spiked ball.... advice from a physiotherapist. At first I thought the sciatica was due to the op but now I'm wondering if it was because I was laying down a lot on the sofa and probably not always in a straight position. Time will tell.

I have had abdomen period like pain and a feeling of something dragging in my vagina on and off over the last 3 weeks. I think this was when I picked something up that was a bit heavy. Every time I got the pain I jumped on the sofa and rested for the rest of the day.

I'm now back to driving and work (desk job). My external stitches are pulling a bit but otherwise I feel fine. I hope the sciatica resolves in time... I'll let you know

Looking back... the horror stories helped as it made me take the advice to not lift anything seriously. Though if I'd read them before surgery I'm not sure I would have gone through with it. When things go wrong it seems it's very bad news. What is needed is published information on the outcomes by surgeon/hospital. If you're going for this op my advice would be to ask for statistics on rejection/complications so you can truly make an informed decision.

Would I have it done again ? Too early to say but boy have I been anxious over the last 3 weeks!

Still got re starting sexual activity to go yet . I'll let you know how that goes but I'm holding out as long as I can to avoid any necessary pain

    Hope the above helps

If going for this op you should also ask the surgeon if he can remove the TVT and his experiance in removing it such as successes and failures.

If you get pain in the groin that feels like glass sticking in get it removed as the longer it is left in the harder it becomes to remove.

My health has gone completely downhill as a result of this mesh TVT  and in turn worsened the thyroid condition I have to say avoid this surgery if you already suffer from autoimmune conditions.

I have to take steroids and the complications of those due to the joint and muscle pain that did not exist before this mesh TVT surgery. I am now faced with having to have some of this mesh removed at a time when my health has worsened through it, so I would say getting it removed earlier as soon as problems develop is better all round.

It makes me cross that surgeons are still not informing patients correctly knowing full well the harm it is causing.

Would Scotland have suspended this type of surgery if it is not causing serrious problems.

How are you doing now Louise? I have been offered the tvt op but am having second thoughts.

      Hi Louise

I had my tvt 2 weeks ago. Like you I wish I had read about it but went ahead and had it done. Today I've had a few sharp pains on and off during the day. My right groin feels sore dome days and one week after procedure while laying on the long I could feel the groin ache. I had to get up and move around as my thigh felt numb.

I feel an urgency to go to the toilet and am taking ural sachets and cranberry juice to prevent uti. I've been putting off for two days calling my specialist for fear of being told it's all normal . I don't feel right and the prickly stabbing just feels odd. I also have pubic bone pain. To top it off I'm not sleeping. It's 12, 30am and I'm wide awake. I started driving yesterday to pick my son up from school. It's 38mins total and I feel jabbing in my stich area.

I'm still hoping it's too soon but after reading all the comments I feel I should go and take it out. Should I just wait?

Oh and I get chest pain and out of breath when I do lay down. ??

Hi Maria, although I had my TVT around 12 years ago, I still recall having quite a few aches and pains after the surgery. I suspect that the doctors move us around during the operation so that although we aren't aware, our bodies ache afterwards. I returned to the doctor once when I felt like something inside me ripped but she explained that once the mesh is in place our bodies grow into it so that it becomes a part of us. About a year after the surgery, I thought that it was fantastic and the best thing that I had ever done. My sister said the same thing. Up until recently when I started querying frequent uti's I still thought that it was very good and far better than wetting myself every time I coughed or laughed and the other option of wearing thick incontinence pads. I'm hopeful that I can sort out my current problems and they may or may not be associated with the TVT. Good luck and try not to stress about it as that will only make it worse. cheesygrinbiggrin

I can report all is well 10 months on. Would I do it again? I don't know. .. probably wouldn't have had it done the first time if I'd read the horror stories beforehand. They're not honest with you before the op about what can go wrong. They don't explain in detail.eg.. "it might not work" doesn't explain the impact! ! You're not fully informed when you give your consent!

That said.... so far I'm one of the lucky ones.

Hi Maria, I'm due to s op on Tuesday. I am wondering if it's worth it. I was told no driving for four to six weeks if you have a heavy clutch.  Must give the body time to settle around the tape and so keep it in position. I am having second thoughts! Someone has said " I' d rather have just stayed home than all, this" so I'm still wondering whether to pull the plug!! Impact stuff is a night mare..and I was on a fitness course tenna lady-ed up in stretch leggings!!
