What do you think is the best period of time between having a first and second THR?

I accept this can have many factors (such as urgency and other health issues), but I was looking at it from a recovery stance.

    G'day Hogtog,

It's an interesting question - many folk on this site seem to have both within a year; in USA some get both together too.

In my case it was pure medical expediency. One hip crumbled to bone on bone (ooch) 15 years ago and was reasurfaced then,  then second was done last year by THR, as while my resurfaced hip is (touch wood) still fine, they no londer do the resurfacing.

would be a  luxury to pick and choose, but pain and waiting lists probably count for more

    Warm regards

    Mic

Wow! Resurfacing - that sound interesting. I have never heard of that.

I just wondered if (all things being equal):

      a) was it better to have the first rehabilitation completed and back to full strength first;

      or

      b) suffer all the discomfort and frustration in one hit.

I guess there may be too many variables confused

Resurfacing seems to be unpopular in the UK because it doesn't seem to last for long enough - so has to be redone with a 'total' replacement later anyway, so the total cost is higher than doing the total replacement in the first place.

      Hi Hogtog and Rocketman,

      Gretings.

Think we need to go on evidence based health findings as much as individual stories. So, I've seen some evidence suggesting over high titanium ions in bloodstream particularly of females caused concern after resurfacing. Still available at some hospitals in UK...my version is called the Birmingham hip. It's less intrusive and simpler surgery.

And....after 14 years my own resurfacing is still fine....and no wish to redo it. As I wrote earlier, I'd have been happy to have same op again! Both ops similar rapid recovery by the way...

      Cheers

      Thanks Mic

Well, this forum is certainly educating. What with resurfacing and a Birmingham Hip....

I shall have to certainly mention it in passing to my wife who is from Birmingham.

That has amused me - perhaps it is just me (no offence intended).

Sounds like it has worked well for you then

It was just an impression I formed, hence the 'seems to be' comment.

    Hi Michael,

I can only share my personal experience and my personal opinionrolleyes -

there were almost 6 months between my surgeries as this was the time the surgeon wanted ... so that is one thing -

Those 6 months were very challenging - Right hip was operated on and recovering when left leg/hip started to get more painful and weaker - Could not escape that grinding OA pain and felt bad for new hip ...In my case sooner would have probably been better - By the time it was September 10 I could barely stand up straight, walk, sit etc ....

OMG, when left hip was done I felt invincible - euphoria ! that pain was gone of course - however, my right  old new hip was very weak- so both of them needed to get stronger and I am still in that process -

Right now my old new hip is giving me challenges - This whole new way of walking and balancing the body, this retraining of my brain, is tiring and still not natural for me ....

I wish I had the 2nd surgery sooner - maybe it wouldn't have made a difference

as said many times before : it might take 12-18  months to be fully healed -

How are you doing otherwise ? how is the walking going?

    Big warm hug

      Hi Renee

Yes, your story does sound concerning. I hope you are able to retrain the brain soon - an added complication you could do without.

It's all good at this end. I am walking further and more often, so I am very happy on that count. I must try and keep the momentum up when my wife goes back to work - it would be too easy just to stay in doors.

Luckiy, my eye sight is also back to full strength. I was getting full-on forehead headaches if I looked at a screen for more than a few minutes and I could not focus on the printed word. I was told that this was a side-effect of the anaesthetic and would wear off - which it now has, for the most part.

So, all in all, very upbeat and positive :-D

      Big warm hugs

      Michael

    Hey

Both my hips were in a terrible state and needed done asap. While my doctor told me he would be doing one at a time the next one would be done 6 to 8 weeks after 1st. Thats whats happening l had my 1st op 9th dec and am getting my 2nd op 15th feb. I am desperate to get my next one done as my recovery for 1st has been amazing and now my operated leg is the strongest and best leg l have. My other leg is holding me back now so l want it done. I feel ready. I think it all depends on your recovery time from 1st as everyone is doffrent.

    Good Luck whatever you decide

      Hey Laura

ooooh, Feb 15 - not long now!!!

Oh, I wish you well and a speedy recovery. Having read Rocketman's blog, I am kind of sorry I did not keep a record. Especially when my wife tells me things that happened in the first days (post op) of which I have no recollection.

I am still getting ised to being pain free and learning to walk properly. Each day is better and so am full of the joys of spring- especially now that the days are getting longer!

      Do keep us posted!

      Take care

      Michael
