Two surgeries coming up. Advice on what to expect with recovery and PMR.

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have a simple foot surgery coming up for Plantar Faschitis. This is my second one, but on the other foot. I recovered pretty well from my last one before PMR. I was running in 6 weeks. Then two weeks later I will have a hysterectomy and reconstruction. I'm a bit worried I will flare as I did in September.

I need to get these done as I struggle to walk. The female surgery has been needed for many years. I am 62 and any further delay in this I feel will make recovery harder as I age. Let's not forget my insurance deductible is paid for the year!

How have some of you done with PMR and surgery? I am currently on 7.5 mg and decreasing to 5mg by hysterectomy surgery.

Advise please.

    Hello Pam

In early July I had surgery to remove my gall bladder, they gave me an extra shot of pred whilst in surgery to help my body cope, at the time I was at around the 7mg mark.   I was fine and didn't have any after effects of PMR.

Im awaiting foot surgery which has been delayed for some reason to do with the consultant, at the moment I take 3mg and hoping that I will do just as well come the time for surgery.

hope that helps in some way.

    take care.

The only people I personally know of who have had surgery had hip replacements - both of the had no problem with flares and in fact were able to reduce their pred well post-op. It was almost as if the removal of the pain associated with the hip had been triggering some of the PMR pain.

Their surgeons were only interested in them being on a stable dose - i.e. not risking a flare which would have interfered with their post op recovery and mobilisation.

Ooooh, I love these stories. My first THR is 2 weeks from today and the pain is so intense that I am having a hard time believing it is not the old PMR devil. So the fear is that i will have the joint replaced and still have pain. Ortho doc says new hip will help with the PMR.....fingers crossed.

I gather it is fair to say that you won't necessarily wake up pain-free - but there will be a different sort of pain and it will improve! I imagine you will also stand/walk better so any back muscle issues will change - whether for the better or worse I suppose one has to wait and see. Having a wisdom tooth out removed some pretty horrendous back and neck pain that had developed after sorting out other back problems - it was affecting my bite!

I've had two surgeries since I started my pred or PMR and am having a knee arthroscopy in a few hours today actually.  For my first knee arthroscopy they gave me a boost of steroids to kick up my system along with my anesthesia.  They said they will again today too (I am on 10 mg coated pred called Rayos taken half in morning and half at 10pm).  Last monday I had cataract surgery and they didn't add any extra boost, said it wasn't needed.  I did just fine after the first two, no flares, no issues, very fast healing.  In fact, I had been told to stop all steroids for the first surgery (mistakenly told to - it turned out to be incorrect information per my doctor later but I was only on 5 mg at that point).  Even so, I was off them for the week prior to surgery (off all vitammins too) and the pain and everything was back full force and that was horrible.  The day after the surgery I went to 10 mg and was fine, and have been.  As a result, my rheumatologist told me to stick at 10 mg for another 6 weeks to stablize and don't try reducing yet, come in for blood work, and then she'd see what's up.  Hope that helps.
