Hi Helen. I've only been diagnosed for one year but believe I had UC a lot longer. I for one definately feel my overall health is compromised. I do get more colds and things. Also aches and pains that I hadn't had before. I do spend a lot of time not feeling very well. Doing some research I think it's the way UC lowers your resistance. Saying that I believe there are times in your life when you're just unlucky and get more viuses and stuff than other times.

If you are being treated with immunosuppressants e.g. a corticosteroid such as Prednisolone or maybe an IDH inhibitor such as Azathioprine then you will be more susceptible to infections.

With an autoimmune disease such as UC, the immune system attacks the body’s own tissue. Because immunosuppressant drugs weaken the immune system, they suppress this reaction. This helps reduce the impact of the autoimmune disease but the trade off is that you are likely to fall prey to infections which affect other parts of the body.
